Rory Burns hit 133 to record a maiden Test century as England posted a 90-run lead after the first innings, but the match went away from Joe Root's side on day four.
Twin hundreds from Smith and Matthew Wade saw Australia declared on 487-7 - and their lead was ample to seal a 1-0 series advantage.
It is the first time Australia have won the first Test on English shores since 2005, when Michael Vaughan's side recovered to take the series.
Joe Root will be hoping that is an omen as the two sides head to Lord's for the second Test next week.
