Australia v New Zealand live: All Blacks keep Rugby Championship title hopes alive with win

Quinn Tupaea scored a brace of tries as New Zealand fended off Australia 28-14 in the Perth rain to give themselves a chance of Rugby Championship glory.

The win put the All Blacks top of the table ahead of defending champions South Africa, but the Springboks can claim back-to-back titles with victory over Argentina in Twickenham later on Saturday.

Having replaced the dropped Billy Proctor in the No 13 jersey, Tupaea rewarded coach Scott Robertson's faith with two well-taken tries to put the All Blacks up 17-9 at half-time.

Leroy Carter also crossed for New Zealand early in the opening half, with teammate George Bower coming off the bench to secure a bonus point by barging over for a fourth try seconds after the final hooter.

Here are some highlights from that All Blacks win in Perth

New Zealand hope for Argentina favour

13:11 , Luke Baker

So, the Rugby Championship all comes down to the final match - Argentina v South Africa at Twickenham later today.

This All Blacks win has put them back top of the table, four points ahead of the Springboks but South Africa’s far superior points difference means any sort of win over the Pumas in south-west London will see them retain their title.

New Zealand will be hoping Argentina can do them a favour

FULL-TIME! Australia 14-28 New Zealand

13:05 , Luke Baker

All over in Perth and you can’t fault the All Blacks today. They did what they needed to and even secured a bonus point at the death.

It’s a record 11th straight win for New Zealand over Australia. Dominance

TRY! Australia 14-28 New Zealand (George Bower, 80+1 mins)

13:04 , Luke Baker

All Blacks surge towards the line, stopped a metre out. Tuipulotu plunges for the line, just short...

BUT THERE’S THE TRY! Savea fakes to go himself, pops to replacement prop George Bower and he drives over the line with two men helping him. Job done for New Zealand.

Australia 14-23 New Zealand, 80 mins

13:01 , Luke Baker

Love saves the All Blacks move with a great pick-up off his toes but play is stopped because Josh Flook is down. That looks really nasty - wrong position in the tackle and his head hits the hip of Jordie Barrett.

I think he was knocked out cold. The medic are quickly on to treat him, stabilise his neck and get him off the pitch. Applause as he’s able to stand up and walk off under his own power. Superb news.

We’ll restart with an All Blacks scrum, deep in the Australia 22.

Australia 14-23 New Zealand, 79 mins

12:58 , Luke Baker

Wait. We're going all the way back for an All Black penalty on the other side of the field after a croc roll...

So another chance from five metres out. Lineout secured nicely and they try to go to the right but come back AGAIN for a penalty. Another lineout...

Australia 14-23 New Zealand, 78 mins

12:58 , Luke Baker

Lienout steal from Williams, tidied up by Cooper but Edmed’s attempted clearance kick is half-charged down and the ball bounces to Jordan, still in the Australia 22.

Ratima with a nice surge, then the forwards run a couple of phases in the tight. Taukei’aho keeps his legs moving and they’re five metres out but Wallabies win a turnover! Good defensive structure and Sititi knocks on in contact as Jorgensen bursts out of the line.

Australia 14-23 New Zealand, 76 mins

12:53 , Luke Baker

Lineout goes over the back to Savea and he carries up towards the 22. Penalty advantage coming as Ikitau is miles offside.

Kick to the corner from the All Blacks and they’re hunting a try that would put Australia away.

Australia 14-23 New Zealand, 74 mins

12:52 , Luke Baker

The All Blacks can enter game management mode now, although conceding a free-kick at scrum-time immediately probably isn’t that.

The Wallabies run into the opposition half but ball-playing in these conditions is far from easy. Jorgensen does well to stay infield but Australia are pinged for an illegal takedown at the breakdown as skipper Wilson croc rolls a man.

PENALTY! Australia 14-23 New Zealand (Damian McKenzie, 71 mins)

12:48 , Luke Baker

Damian McKenzie hasn’t been great off the tee today to be honest but he’ll try this one from right of centre, 30 metres out.

No problem this time! Slices the uprights and the lead is beyond a score, at nine points.

Australia 14-20 New Zealand, 69 mins

12:47 , Luke Baker

Scrappy. The ball slipping everywhere now as Tupou spills it in his own half but backwards. Eventually Lonergan opts for the long box-kick.

Jordan chases his own contestable in response and the All Blacks win the penalty as Edmed fails to release the ball. McReight down receiving treatment now. When the clock restarts, New Zealand will take a shot at the posts.

TRY! Australia 14-20 New Zealand (Len Ikitau, 67 mins)

12:43 , Luke Baker

This is the closest the Wallabies have been for about an hour. The lineout is secured and the maul starts rumbling.

Stopped, illegally, a couple of metres short so we’ve got a penalty coming. They keep it tight, a couple of burrows for the line, then it’s really clever from Len Ikitau.

Waits patiently at the base, Carter goes offside and Ikitau then quickly picks the ball up and moves it forward the couple of inches required to dot down. Try scored!

Edmed hits the inside of the post with the conversion! Very unlucky. Back within a score though.

Australia 9-20 New Zealand, 66 mins

12:40 , Luke Baker

We’re moving towards now or never stage for the Aussies and this is a golden opportunity. A penalty sees them kick to the corner. Five-metre lineout.

PENALTY! Australia 9-20 New Zealand (Damian McKenzie, 62 mins)

12:37 , Luke Baker

The penalty is bang in front, probably 35 metres out and Damian McKenzie makes no mistake. Good strike and the All Black lead is at 11.

Australia 9-17 New Zealand, 61 mins

12:36 , Luke Baker

To avert their lineout woes, New Zealand go to Newell at the front. It’s effective enough, although Carter’s kick through shortly after is too long and dotted down for a goal-line dropout.

Jordan frees his hand and loops a spectacular offload before Valetini goes high on a slipping Barrett for an All Blacks penalty - nothing more. Shot at the posts upcoming

Australia 9-17 New Zealand, 58 mins

12:32 , Luke Baker

Brave from Jordan there as Jorgensen starts to pursue a kick ahead but the All Blacks full back patiently waits for it to bounce dead out the back of the in-goal area, just beating the Wallabies start there.

New Zealand scrum back on halfway is the reward but Rob Valetini, off the bench a little while ago, immediately wins a turnover from it as he gets over the ball at the breakdown.

Australia 9-17 New Zealand, 55 mins

12:27 , Luke Baker

Quick ball from the All Blacks and Taylor carries well but are penalised for a Williams takeout off the ball and then marched 10 metres further for backchat! Reprieve for the hosts. For now, at least

(Getty Images)

Australia 9-17 New Zealand, 53 mins

12:25 , Luke Baker

Parker on the carry but Suaalii drives him backwards. Big tackle! The All Blacks sticking a contestable kick up in the air, which is spilled, although Gordon picks up well, slips through a tackle and almost gets away. Instead, he’s isolated and pinged for holding on.

New Zealand with a platform on the 22.

Australia 9-17 New Zealand, 50 mins

12:23 , Luke Baker

Ikitau’s sin-bin will stay as a yellow card, as we expected.

Once again, Australia are managing the period of being a man down pretty well.

The rain is streaming down now - ball handling is so tough. Lineout in the All Black 22, Australia try to spread it but Hooper’s pass is errant and New Zealand boot clear, all the way into the Wallabies 22. They lost 60 metres off that turnover.

Australia 9-17 New Zealand, 48 mins

12:19 , Luke Baker

Australia win a penalty in All Black territory and Gordon injects some pace as he taps and goes and darts into the 22.

New Zealand recover though and when Daugunu pokes a kick through, Parker scrmables back to do down behind his own line for the 22 drop out

SIN-BIN! Australia 9-17 New Zealand (Len Ikitau, 45 mins)

12:17 , Luke Baker

Hmmm, Australia back down to 14 men. Shortly after Slipper is subbed off, the TMO pulls up a replay of a Len Ikitau tackle. He’s not dipped enough and made head to head contact with the ball carrier.

No complaints. Ten minutes in the sin-bin for Ikitau and the bunker will review it. Should stay a yellow, I think, as there wasn’t a hugely high degree of danger.

Australia 9-17 New Zealand, 45 mins

12:15 , Luke Baker

Here’s the moment. James Slipper departs the field for the last time as he’s subbed off in his 151st and final Wallabies cap. Standing ovation from the entire stadium and even a handshake from referee Matthew Carley.

(AP)

Australia 9-17 New Zealand, 43 mins

12:13 , Luke Baker

Loose play from Australia in their own half as Suaalii’s offload hits the deck and the ball is then turned over to give the All Blacks a decent platform.

Carter somehow keeps the ball in when he’s about to be pushed into touch and New Zealand run the phases. Truthfully, they’re not really going anywhere, stuck around halfway but Roigaard fizzes a kick into the 22 and into touch to pin the Wallabies back near their own line.

KICK-OFF! Australia 9-17 New Zealand

12:10 , Luke Baker

Back underway in the second half in Perth. Will the All Blacks see this out?

WATCH: Jordie Barrett's assist with his face

12:00 , Luke Baker

Not exactly intentional from Jordie Barrett but his diving attempt to collect the ball led to him producing a try assist with his face

HALF-TIME! Australia 9-17 New Zealand

11:56 , Luke Baker

One final chance for the Wallabies as Suaalii spots a gap to glide through and then kicks ahead. He gives chase but is just beaten to the ball and the All Blacks can scramble it away to bring half-time.

An odd first 40 minutes - Australia have probably controlled proceedings on the whole but Quinn Tupaea’s quickfire double, in addition to Leroy Carter’s early try, mean the All Blacks lead by eight points.

Tane Edmed’s boot has at least kept the Wallabies score ticking but they’ll need to find a way to take their chances after the break

(Getty Images)

Australia 9-17 New Zealand, 38 mins

11:53 , Luke Baker

McKenzie missed both those conversions, by the way, so the lead is only eight points despite the try count being 3-0 to the All Blacks.

The game is frenzied now! Space for New Zealand to attack as they flick the ball wide but Fainga’anuku’s offload from the tackle hits the deck.

The Wallabies are then equally unstructured as Jorgensen makes a burst but again the ball eventually dropped.

TRY! Australia 9-17 New Zealand (Quinn Tupaea, 36 mins)

11:52 , Luke Baker

And now Quinn Tupaea has another quickfire try! The All Blacks turning it on.

Jordan with a good initial carry from the scrum keeps them going forward and Tupaea gets the ball in the 22. From there, it’s all about the New Zealand centre as he slips between two tackles and charges for the line, diving over the whitewash. Big celebration from the outside centre - he’s turned this game around.

(Getty Images)

Australia 9-12 New Zealand, 34 mins

11:49 , Luke Baker

Tane Edmed kicks off for Australia and the ball just goes far enough to not give away the penalty as it bounces into touch.

TRY! Australia 9-12 New Zealand (Quinn Tupaea, 33 mins)

11:48 , Luke Baker

Both teams have been frankly dreadful on their own lineout today and Australia turn another one over in their own 22.

And the All Blacks counter at speed! Jordie Barrett puts a low grubber through and when Potter slides across to try and collect it, the ball bounces up and hits he chasing Barrett in the face. That knocks it further forward when Quinn Tupaea twice hacks ahead and dots down for the try.

A bit lucky/unlucky depending on your perspective for Barrett but Tupaea takes full advantage!

Australia 9-7 New Zealand, 32 mins

11:43 , Luke Baker

Roigaard carries well over halfway for the visitors before Jordie Barrett’s little grubber ahead doesn’t quite bounce up for him.

Scrum on halfway and the All Black pack looks stable once again. But McReight gets over the ball and earns a penalty for Australia. The first critical breakdown win by the Wallabies flanker today

Australia 9-7 New Zealand, 29 mins

11:39 , Luke Baker

Superb take leaping high in the air by Daugunu. Tackler not rolling away, with an All Black then following in to jackal, so Australia move into enemy territory with the penalty kicked to touch.

McReight with a barrelling carry up the middle before Edmed floats a pass out to Potter but his grubber kick ahead bounces just long and dead. Edmed managing this game really nicely for the hosts.

(Getty Images)

Australia 9-7 New Zealand, 26 mins

11:36 , Luke Baker

Edmed loops around and Jorgensen stretches his lead down the right to move up towards halfway. Proctor with the superb dive and wrap tackle though and they then win the penalty.

They get the lineout in Australian territory but again New Zealand make a mess of it and knock on in the air. Slippy conditions playing their part?

Mixed news for the Wallabies as Tom Hooper’s sin-bin is done so they’re back to 15 but Will Skelton has failed his HIA so will play no further part in this match

Australia 9-7 New Zealand, 23 mins

11:33 , Luke Baker

This is more expansive from the All Blacks. They shift the ball left and Jordan slides through a gap before being scragged from behind by Suaalii.

It’s go-forward ball and they flood right, stretching the hosts but the scramble defence force a knock-on in the 22 and Australia will have the scrum. Good covering.

Australia 9-7 New Zealand, 21 mins

11:31 , Luke Baker

That’s a waste. Not straight on the lineout from Australia, so a scrum for the All Blacks.

Dominant! The New Zealand pack obliterate their Wallabies counterparts, who are a man light, and win the penalty to move towards halfway

Australia 9-7 New Zealand, 19 mins

11:29 , Luke Baker

Ooof. Great read and hit from McKenzie as he darts out of the line. Edmed then tries a crossfield kick but it skids out of play on the slick turf.

However, Frost with superb lineout work to pinch it, the Wallabies then win the penalty and Edmed kicks them down into the 22. Another solid platform to work from for Australia.

(Getty Images)

PENALTY! Australia 9-7 New Zealand (Tane Edmed, 17 mins)

11:27 , Luke Baker

The Wallabies may be down a man but they now lead by two points. The All Blacks lose their discipline again, it’s eminently kickable for Tane Edmed and he bisects the uprights.

It’s also confirmed that Hooper’s sin-binning will remain a yellow card due to there not being a high degree of danger. So he’ll be back on in six minutes or so.

Australia 6-7 New Zealand, 15 mins

11:25 , Luke Baker

This is more bad news for Australia. The talismanic Will Skelton is being led off for a HIA, with Jeremy Williams coming on. Skelton walking slightly gingerly.

SIN-BIN! Australia 6-7 New Zealand (Tom Hooper, 13 mins)

11:23 , Luke Baker

This is gorgeous play from Australia, moving the ball so well and Ikitau behind a forward pod powerfully carries to a few metres away. Slipper then plunges for the line, stopped short but now the Wallabies are over from close range!

But an immediate TMO review... We’re back to look at a ruck and this is going to be wiped off. Tom Hooper with a dangerous clearout, almost crocodile rolling on to the leg of the All Black player - that could have been really nasty.

It’s dangerous and meets the yellow card threshold, so Hooper will spend 10 minutes in the sin-bin. The bunker will also review it, although I think it will stay yellow.

Australia 6-7 New Zealand, 12 mins

11:20 , Luke Baker

Nice turn of pace from Jorgensen to split between two defenders near halfway.

And now the Wallabies are away down the left. Stunning hands and Jorgensen pops up again to surge down the flank deep into All Black territory

PENALTY! Australia 6-7 New Zealand (Tane Edmed, 11 mins)

11:18 , Luke Baker

No mistake from Tane Edmed. He’s two from two off the tee as his central kick splits the uprights.

Australia 3-7 New Zealand, 10 mins

11:17 , Luke Baker

Williams pinged almost straight from kick-off as he doesn’t support his bodyweight at a ruck, so an immediate chance for Australia to respond to the try

TRY! Australia 3-7 New Zealand (Leroy Carter, 8 mins)

11:16 , Luke Baker

Superb efficiency by the All Blacks. Clean lineout, the ball is spun out and a driving run puts them within a metre of the line.

Leroy Carter picks up, goes low and burrows under Slipper for the try. Perfect body position from the winger. Conversion added and the visitors on top

Australia 3-0 New Zealand, 8 mins

11:14 , Luke Baker

The Wallabies make a mess of the kick-off as Frost fumbles forward and then Australia commit the penalty for good measure.

Kick to touch and the All Blacks have a five-metre lineout

PENALTY! Australia 3-0 New Zealand (Tane Edmed, 7 mins)

11:13 , Luke Baker

The All Blacks defence stiffens, keeping the Wallabies around the edge of the 22 but they stray offside.

Nothing made of the advantage, although some nice quick hands, so we’re back for the penalty. Tane Edmed points to the posts - it’s a simple kick and first blood Australia.

Australia 0-0 New Zealand, 5 mins

11:11 , Luke Baker

Skelton hit hard by Williams - giant on giant action there. Australia retain the ball though as Hooper and Daugunu make carries.

And now they’re well into the 22. Loose ball is picked up by Potter, he darts through a gap and feeds Daugunu who does well to stay infield. Good platform here.

MISSED PENALTY! Australia 0-0 New Zealand (Damian McKenzie, 3 mins)

11:10 , Luke Baker

Oooh, Damian McKenzie errs from the tee. Long-range effort but it’s pretty central. However the All Blacks No 10 sees his shot slide wide of the uprights

Australia 0-0 New Zealand, 2 mins

11:09 , Luke Baker

Decent exit by Australia as Gordon gets good distance on his early box kick into touch. Nice, quick hands by the All Blacks though and Fainga’anuku gets his first touch in the famous black jersey since the 2023 World Cup. Finds contact.

But welcome back Will Skelton! The towering lock makes a nuisance of himself at the breakdown and wins the penalty.

But it’s reversed! Referee Matthew Carley not happy with Skelton’s reaction, pushing and shoving after winning the penalty, so New Zealand will take a shot at goal

KICK-OFF! Australia 0-0 New Zealand

11:06 , Luke Baker

Here we go in Perth - Damian McKenzie hoofs the ball up into the air and we’re underway.

Can the All Blacks ramp up the pressure on South Africa in the race for the Rugby Championship title or will the resurgent Wallabies end their campaign on a high?

(Getty Images)

James Slipper emotional before final game

11:05 , Luke Baker

James Slipper looked pretty emotional during Advance Australia Fair there, understandably so. The veteran prop will hang up his boots (slippers?) at the end of today after 151 Wallabies appearances.

The Haka is now done, so we’re finally ready to go in Perth. Just 20 minutes after the advertised kick-off time...

(Getty Images)
