Australia vs Egypt LIVE: World Cup 2026 result, latest updates and fan reaction after penalties

Australia vs Egypt LIVE

A fascinating World Cup round of 32 showdown was settled by a penalty shootout as Australia and Egypt could not be separated after 90 minutes and extra-time in Dallas on Friday evening. The Pharaohs took the lead early in the first half thanks to a Emam Ashour header but were pegged back shortly before the hour mark, and by one of their own when defender Mohamed Hany turned into his own net.

Egypt looked the more likely to find a winner with Haissem Hassan and Rami Rabia both going close, but the tie went to penalties. Australia’s gamble by replacing Patrick Beach with the more experienced Mathew Ryan right before the shootout backfired as the goalkeeper did not get near any of the four penalties.

After Harry Souttar and youngster Lucas Herrington had both missed from 12 yards, it was left to Hossam Abdelmaguid with the decisive spot kick and he sent Ryan the wrong way to seal Egypt’s place in the World Cup last-16 where a showdown against either the reigning champions Argentina or surprise package Cape Verde awaits. Australia 1-1 Egypt

20:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Game on in Dallas.

HALF-TIME

19:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Australia 0-1 Egypt

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+4 min: More half-hearted Australia penalty appeals turned down. Worryingly for the Aussies, Bos is down after a tackle from Rabia and he needs treatment.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:49 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+3 min: Wicked cross into the box, Irankunda gets in between two Egypt defenders which stops him from getting clean contact on the ball. He appeals for a penalty, but the referee is having none of it.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:47 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+2 min: Ball over the top picks out the run of Salah and he tries to glance the ball back for Ziko but can’t get enough on the header. Good idea.

At the other end, Shobeir watches Volpato’s effort curl wide of his far post.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45 min: Into a minimum of FIVE minutes of stoppage time.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

43 min: Irankunda catches Ibrahim on the ankle and the Egypt defender needs a moment. He has words for the Australia forward, so would assume he is OK.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:41 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

41 min: Egypt are awarded a fortunate free-kick as Ashour went down after being caught in the face accidentally by Bos. Fortunately for Australia, the set-piece comes to nothing. That would have been controversial.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:38 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

38 min: Well-timed tackle from Hafez on Bos to concede a corner for Australia which is eventually dealt with by Egypt following a brief moment of mis-communication.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:36 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

36 min: Good news for Egypt as Hany is back on the field. Magic spray does the trick. Some defending for him to do as Australia try to build an attack but they have to settle for a throw which is launched by Circati.

Ball drops kindly for Behich who shoots straight at Shobeir. Better from Australia.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:33 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

33 min: Australia free-kick causing all sorts of problem as Bos shoots straight at Shobeir. However, the whistle had been blown for a foul by Irvine.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:32 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

32 min: Big concern this for Egypt as Hany needs treatment after picking up a knock to his knee.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:31 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

31 min: A few big names spotted in the crowd. First, former Arsenal and Egypt midfielder Mohamed Elneny is sitting in the posh seats.

Samuel L Jackson is also in attendance.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:29 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

28 min: Australia need at least two goals to have any chance of reaching the World Cup last-16.

Here is the problem, they have only scored two goals in the entire tournament.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:26 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

26 min: Play resumes after the hydration break. Will be interesting to see if it changes the complexion of the match. Australia will certainly hope so.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:23 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

23 min: Australia corner is deep, Herrington is able to make first contact but the angle is awkward and his header goes behind for a goal kick as we enter the hydration break.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:21 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

21 min: CHANCE! Ziko races on to Fathy’s ball over the top but shoots wide. Should hit the target, at the very least, but the offside flag was up.

Another warning for Australia.

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

19 min: Great header and an even better finish. Emam Ashour with his second goal of the tournament has put Egypt 1-0 up against Australia.

(Getty)

Australia 0-1 Egypt

19:17 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

16 min: Egypt sense a second as Marmoush brings down a long ball, cuts inside and aims for the far post but Souttar with a big block keeps out the Man City forward.

GOAL! Australia 0-1 Egypt | Emam Ashour ‘14

19:14 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

14 min: EGYPT LEAD!

Emam Ashour heads Egypt in front inside the opening 15 minutes, very good effort after his initial effort had been blocked.

Australia 0-0 Egypt

19:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

11 min: Egypt rather fortunate as Australia press them high and the win the ball in a good position, but they end up conceding a free-kick and here comes Marmoush on the left-hand side before Ziko wins a free-kick in a very dangerous position.

Australia 0-0 Egypt

19:07 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

7 min: First sign of Bos’ pace as he gets in down the Egypt left-hand side but Rabia is on hand to make a crucial block to concede a corner which is then defended well.

Bizarre from Australia to take that set-piece short.

Australia 0-0 Egypt

19:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

5 min: CROSSBAR! Volpato with a great turn and strike, denied only by the woodwork. Great effort from the Australia forward.

Australia 0-0 Egypt

19:03 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

3 min: A really low-key start to this round of 32 clash as Australia seem happy to let Egypt dominate possession.

Huge boost for Egypt

Mohamed Salah starts Egypt’s World Cup 2026 round-of-32 clash with Australia today.

Liverpool icon Salah was among a number of Pharaohs players needing to be assessed after he sustained a hamstring strain during the 1-1 draw with Iran in Group G.

The Egypt captain was subject to an “intensive rehabilitation program” and has since returned to partial team training.

And while Salah is fit enough to start against Australia, it remains to be seen if he is ready to play the full 90 minutes.

Circati previews Egypt clash

18:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Here is what Australia defender Alessandro Circati has said about facing Egypt.

"I'm thinking them for them to be quite aggressive, to use the individual abilities that they have, try exploit that.

"We know the sort of players that they have, and maybe create the game through them.

"We’ve got to try to stop that, and really take our chances, exploit their vulnerabilities, and try to finish the game with a win."

“It's a knockout game, everyone will approach it in their own way, everyone will react to it in their own way, but the boys are aware of what is at stake, and we are aware that we're going to get a result.”
