Report

Thanks for following along as India defeated Australia by five wickets in the third T20 to level the series. We’ll be back on Thursday for the fourth of the five games… but before then, here is the full report from the match in Hobart.

Updated

Australia were in the unfamiliar position of batting first but failed to put enough runs on the board in conditions that suited the chasers. Tim David and Marcus Stoinis were the only Australians to put the pressure back on the bowlers, though the hosts will hope to recall Glenn Maxwell for the fourth T20 in the five-match series on Thursday. Mitch Marsh is talking to Fox Sports…

We felt we were 20 short so we’ve got to find a way to get more runs. I loved the intent. Tim David, even after losing two wickets in the powerplay, was outstanding. Stoinis showed his experience. Still lots of positives.

India have been on the back foot from the coin toss all tour but made the most of Suryakumar Yadav calling correctly in Hobart and having an opportunity to bowl first.

It was really important to win the toss. [It was] good to break the streak and very happy to be on the winning side.

This was a really good combination. Washington is a flexible batter. Bumrah and Arshdeep is a lethal combination. Shubman and Abhishek are like fire and ice and Bumrah did his job brilliantly.

Arshdeep Singh is named player of the match after taking 3-35 in his first game in the series.

I feel like there is always a chance when someone is coming after you. Jasprit [Bumrah] coming from the other end also helps. It’s just fun whenever I get the chance to bowl.

India win by 5 wickets

India chase down their 187-run target with five wickets in hand at Bellerive Oval in Hobart and level the T20 series against Australia at 1-1. While Australia relied on powerful half-centuries from Tim David and Marcus Stoinis to set a challenging total, each of the tourists’ batters reached double figures as India secured their win with nine balls remaining.

An Australia attack missing Josh Hazlewood for the rest of the series struggled to contain India’s run rate, though Nathan Ellis (3-36) and Xavier Bartlett (1-30) at least picked up wickets at critical times to keep the hosts in the game. Washington Sundar (49no) top-scored for India and helped keep their noses in front with four sixes while Jitesh Sharma (22no) joined the all-rounder to steer their side to victory.

18th over: India 182-5 (Sundar 48, Jitesh 17) DROPPED! Mitch Owen stumbles backwards and spills what was a very gettable chance and that could be that for Australia. Sundar sends Stoinis to the rope with the next delivery as India move to within sight of a series-levelling win.

17th over: India 171-5 (Sundar 39, Jitesh 15) SIX! Washington Sundar is eager to finish this off early as India close in on their target. But he is very nearly out as Marcus Stoinis leaps high to reach the ball sailing over his head at backward square leg only to see the ball land on the wrong side of the rope.

16th over: India 160-5 (Sundar 33, Jitesh 10) Australia roll the dice with Nathan Ellis back to bowl his final over. India are content to see him off with singles until Jitesh Sharma uses the pace of the ball to scoop a boundary over the keeper.

15th over: India 152-5 (Sundar 30, Jitesh 5) Xavier Bartlett gets the breakthrough but Australia need a couple more if they are to prevent India from easing to their target. Jitesh Sharma replaces Tilak Varma and times his first ball of the innings superbly for four at deep point.

WICKET! Tilak c Inglis b Bartlett 29 (India 145-5)

Xavier Bartlett returns with Australia needing a breakthrough to slow India’s momentum. Tilak Varma goes early with a scoop but the ball gets to him quicker than expected and the ball pops up for another simple catch for Inglis.

14th over: India 145-4 (Tilak 29, Sundar 29) Back-to-back SIXES! Washington Sundar swats Sean Abbott to the rope through cover then plunders a pair of sixes over square leg. The India batter has put the game back in his side’s hands with 29 runs from 11 balls, while Abbott has now gone for 50 runs from three overs.

13th over: India 126-4 (Tilak 27, Sundar 12) Washington Sundar sends a stylish straight drive back over Matthew Kuhnemann’s head for four. That’s enough to keep the run-rate ticking along in an otherwise tidy over from the Australia spinner.

12th over: India 119-4 (Tilak 25, Sundar 7) Nathan Ellis continues to trouble the India batters. But after the dismissal of Axar Patel with a short ball, Washington Sundar is quick to pick up the pace and pulls the second ball he faces over square leg for six.

WICKET! Axar c Bartlett b Ellis 17 (India 111-4)

Nathan Ellis drops the ball in short and Axar Patel is the latest India batter to have difficulty playing the Australia quick safely. Xavier Bartlett dives forward to take the catch at midwicket as Ellis picks up his third wicket.

Updated

11th over: India 111-3 (Tilak 24, Axar 17) India keep turning the strike over even with Matthew Kuhnemann back to try to slow the run-rate. But Australia need a wicket or two shortly if they are to turn this game around.

10th over: India 105-3 (Tilak 22, Axar 13) Xavier Bartlett returns as Australia chase a breakthrough before the halfway mark. But Axar Patel welcomes the quick with a whip off the pads that a Mitch Owen dive can’t prevent from reaching the rope. The India pair find it easy to pick up ones and twos with the field now spread.

Updated

9th over: India 95-3 (Tilak 20, Axar 5) SIX! Tilak Varma gets down on one knee and throws the arms to clobber Matthew Short over the fine leg rope. Australia try to get an over out of the part-timer and Short almost gets away with it until Tilak finally middles one.

8th over: India 82-3 (Tilak 12, Axar 3) Marcus Stoinis puts Australia back in command with India’s two main dangers with the bat now back in the stands. It was a cheap dismissal, and not the greatest over from Stoinis, but he won’t mind with Suryakumar now done for the night.

WICKET! Suryakumar c Ellis b Stoinis 24 (India 76-3)

Suryakumar Yadav had been untroubled across the first 10 deliveries that he faced but fails to pick up an off-cutter from Marcus Stoinis and spoons a simple catch to Nathan Ellis in cover. A soft dismissal but that could be a crucial one for Australia.

7th over: India 71-2 (Suryakumar 24, Tilak 4) Matthew Kuhnemann comes into the attack as Australia turn to spin. Tilak Varma finds it difficult to get the spinner away but Suryakumar opens up the face and slices a straight cut to the rope. The shot creates something out of nothing but keeps the score ticking over in much the same way as Stoinis did for Australia.

6th over: India 64-2 (Suryakumar 19, Tilak 2) Nathan Ellis has impressed in this series with his pace as much as his variety and sends Shubman Gill back to the changerooms. Tilak Varma comes in at No 4 and in need of a decent score after a duck on Thursday.

WICKET! Gill lbw b Ellis 15 (India 61-2)

Nathan Ellis traps Shubman Gill in front with an inswinger as the India opener is a touch slow getting his bat down. Gill is almost as slow with his decision to review but sends it upstairs at the last possible moment. He should have waited a second longer as replays show the ball is hitting leg stump.

5th over: India 55-1 (Gill 9, Suryakumar 18) SIX! Sean Abbott drops a ball too short and too close to Suryakumar’s body and is duly sent over the fence at deep fine leg. Abbott oversteps and the India captain clubs the freehit up into the dark sky but barely beyond the bowler. There is enough time to run a single as two Australian fielders let the ball drop between them. Abbott has already gone for 31 runs from his two overs.

Updated

4th over: India 41-1 (Gill 7, Suryakumar 7) Nathan Ellis picks up the critical wicket of Abhishek as the India opener looks to respond to being tied down but chasing everything. Suryakumar Yadav comes in at No 3 and dispatches a ball off his pads over the square leg rope. That’s not the spot to bowl to the India skipper.

WICKET! Abhishek c Inglis b Ellis 25 (India 33-1)

Nathan Ellis comes into the attack and for the third time in as many matches the crafty bowler dismisses the India dangerman Abhishek. Ellis pings the ball in short and fast - 147 kmh - and Abhishek is hurried into the pull shot. A top edge sends the ball up high and Inglis comfortably wraps the gloves around it.

Updated

3rd over: India 30-0 (Abhishek 24, Gill 5) A top quality over from Xavier Bartlett as even Abhishek finds it hard to pick up the pace and movement of each delivery. Four runs from it with three dot balls.

2nd over: India 26-0 (Abhishek 21, Gill 4) Sean Abott takes the new ball in his first game in the series. Abhishek welcomes him with a crunching cut to the rope then chips the ball off his pads sky high over long-on for six. The left-hander ends the over with a straight drive for another four. Australia are yet to find a way to contain the India livewire beyond letting his teammates farm the strike as they did on Thursday.

1st over: India 9-0 (Abhishek 7, Gill 1) Abhishek Sharma has lit up this T20 series and is immediately on the attack as Xavier Bartlett oversteps on the first ball of the innings. Abhishek swings wildly but fails to connect with the free hit. The left-hander makes amends as he backs away and slices over point for six.

Australia have had India on the ropes early in both of the T20s so far in this series but that was due in large part to the bowling of Josh Hazlewood who has now stepped out of the squad to focus on preparing for the Ashes. Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma won’t mind Hazlewood’s absence as they walk out onto Bellerive Oval to get the India innings under way with Xavier Bartlett given the new ball.

Updated

Australia have reached 186-6 without needing to call on Glenn Maxwell even with the star batter now back in the squad. Maxwell was expected to face India in Hobart after recovering from a fractured wrist but still had some discomfort when batting in the nets on Friday. Australia expect him to be available for the fourth T20 in the series on the coming Thursday.

India need 187 to win

Middle-order powerhouses Tim David and Marcus Stoinis blast half-centuries to lift Australia to a strong total in the T20 against India at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. India made a promising start as Arshdeep Singh (3-35) picked up a pair of early wickets on his return to the side before David counterattacked with a typically stunning 74 from 38 deliveries and smashed a monster 129m shot into the stands. Varun Chakravarthy took two wickets in as many balls to put India back in the game before Stoinis (64 off 39) and Matthew Short (26no) steered Australia to 186-6.

Updated

WICKET! Stoinis c Rinku (sub) b Arshdeep 64 (Australia 182-7)

No doubts about this catch from Rinku as he holds onto the ball at long-on to end. Stoinis finishes with 64 from 39 balls.

19th over: Australia 176-5 (Stoinis 58, Short 25) Jasprit Bumrah returns to bowl his final over at the death and Australia find it difficult to get the star pacer away. Bumrah mixes up outswingers with slower balls and yorkers, then finishes off by combining all three.

18th over: Australia 170-5 (Stoinis 56, Short 21) FIFTY! Stoinis whacks a low full toss down the ground but Rinku takes a quality catch diving forward in the deep. The sub fielder throws the ball in the air in celebration. But the third umpire is quick to call that the fielder did not have his fingers under the ball. Stoinis survives hits a pair of boundaries to bring up his half-century from 32 balls. The Australian ramps Arshdeep Singh for a third four of the over.

17th over: Australia 156-5 (Stoinis 43, Short 20) Shivam Dube is given a third over even after giving up 30 runs in his first two. Stoinis welcomes him back with a swat over cover to the rope. Short hits across the line to pick a gap at the boundary for another four runs.

Updated

16th over: Australia 143-5 (Stoinis 37, Short 13) DROPPED! Abhishek Sharma has impressed with the bat in this series and now gets his opportunity with the ball as India continue to turn to spin. Matthew Short doesn’t need a sighter as he slogs with the spin and gets under the shot. Arshdeep Singh barely has to move but with the rope nearby he gets his feet all wrong and drops the catch over the boundary for SIX. Short piles on the pain with a straight drive that Shubman Gill knocks into the rope.

Updated

15th over: Australia 130-5 (Stoinis 35, Short 2) Stoinis keeps finding a boundary just as it seems India are tying him down. Varun gives the batter too much room outside off and Stoinis cuts through point to the rope. The India spinner finishes with 2 for 33 including 12 dot balls.

14th over: Australia 125-5 (Stoinis 30, Short 2) Stoinis pulls out another reverse sweep to the rope as Axar Patel keeps giving the ball too much length. Matthew Short gets off the mark with a more traditional sweep for two.

13th over: Australia 118-5 (Stoinis 25, Short 0) Back-to-back sixes! Stoinis has been happy to let David target the rope but gets in on the fun with a pair of sixes over square leg. The first delivery from Dube drops too short, the next is too full, as the medium pacer loses his length to the all-rounder. But he responds to end the over with the huge wicket of Tim David.

WICKET! David c Tilak b Dube 74 (Australia 118-5)

Tim David chances his hand one too many times as he steps back to give himself room for another rocket down the ground. The right-hander mis-times the shot and picks out Tilak Varma on the rope. David finishes an entertaining innings on 74 off 38 with five sixes and eight fours.

12th over: Australia 103-4 (David 74, Stoinis 10) David pulls back as he defends anything at an awkward length from Axar rather than just swinging wildly. But as soon as Axar gives him a hint of width outside off, David pounces with a boundary through cover.

11th over: Australia 98-4 (David 70, Stoinis 9) SIX! Tim David throws caution to the wind as he steps down the pitch and clobbers Varun back over his head for a fourth six of his innings. Then ends the over with another six that narrowly misses the sightscreen. Stoinis is comfortable playing the anchor role with singles to give the dangerman the strike - something India failed to do in Melbourne on Friday.

10th over: Australia 84-4 (David 57, Stoinis 8) India crowd the bat as Axar Patel takes the ball and the pressure turns back on the Australia batters. Stoinis reverse sweeps a fuller ball to the rope then does the same again to pick up two more. The game feels very even at the halfway mark.

9th over: Australia 75-4 (David 55, Stoinis 1) Varun Chakravarthy turns the contest with two wickets in two balls. But the spinner drags the hat-trick ball short and Marcus Stoinis eases it off his pads for a single.

WICKET! Owen b Varun 0 (Australia 73-4)

Mitch Owen goes first ball as he fails to pick the turn coming back into him and is clean bowled through the gate. Varun on a hat-trick!

Updated

WICKET! Marsh c Tilak Varma b Varun 11 (Australia 73-3)

The in-form Mitch Marsh has taken a backseat with Tim David off to a flyer but seems to have lost his rhythm as he mis-times a slot off Varun to be caught at long-off.

8th over: Australia 72-2 (Marsh 11, David 53) FIFTY! Tim David reaches fifty for the 10th time in T20Is, this one coming from only 23 deliveries. When he gets going, he is next to impossible to contain. Shivam Dube steps up as the next India bowler to try to do just that but David welcomes the pacer with a four, then smashes him for back-to-back boundaries through cover and to third man to bring up his milestone.

Updated

7th over: Australia 57-2 (Marsh 10, David 39) Tim David very nearly hits the ball out of Bellerive Oval. Axar Patel comes into the attack and gives the ball too much flight as David lets fly straight down the ground. That has gone 129m! A new record for the current ball-tracking tool. And to add insult to injury, the ball trickles slowly back down the black tarp sightscreen as the India fielders wait patiently for it to return. Axar can hardly claim he hadn’t been warned as David had already punished a wide ball with a six over cover. David is 38 runs from 18 balls.

6th over: Australia 43-2 (Marsh 9, David 26) DROPPED! Washington Sundar grasses a chance at backward point as Tim David digs out an inswinging yorker. India wouldn’t want to give David too many – if any – more chances, as the Australian powerhouse quickly shows as he clubs Bumrah over cover to the boundary.

5th over: Australia 35-2 (Marsh 7, David 20) SIX! Tim David opens up with a crunching cover drive to the rope than betters it with a huge six over mid-off. That’s the first six of the innings as Varun Chakravarthy replaces Arsheep and is punished for taking time to find his length. David is more than happy to receive anything pitched up into his sweet spot.

4th over: Australia 24-2 (Marsh 7, David 9) Tim David bears no scars from Jasprit Bumrah’s destruction in last summer’s Test series as the Australia batter steps back and clobbers the India quick over cover for a boundary. Even Bumrah’s yorker is of little concern as David jabs it out with ease and picks up a single.

3rd over: Australia 18-2 (Marsh 6, David 4) Two wickets in two overs for Arshdeep Singh brings Tim David in at No 4. It has been a while since the devastating middle-order batter has had an opportunity to settle into an innings rather than be on the attack from the start.

WICKET! Inglis c Patel b Arshdeep 1 (Australia 14-2)

Arshdeep Singh strikes again as Josh Inglis swipes an inswinger off his pads but picks out Axar Patel on the boundary at fine leg.

2nd over: Australia 12-1 (Marsh 5, Inglis 1) Double trouble for Australia as Jasprit Bumrah takes the ball from the other end. But Mitch Marsh dispatches the first ball of the over through square leg to the rope. Bumrah has the ball moving both ways as Marsh and Inglis each add a single.

1st over: Australia 6-1 (Marsh 0, Inglis 0) Arshdeep Singh makes an immediate impact in his first match in the series with the wicket of the dangerous Travis Head. Josh Inglis joins the action earlier than expected and is happy to see out the rest of the over.

WICKET! Head c Suryakumar b Arshdeep 6 (Australia 6-1)

Travis Head is swinging hard from the first ball of the over and races to six with a boundary at fine leg but skies a slog from wide outside off as the India skipper runs back from mid-off to grasp a tricky catch in windy conditions.

Updated

Arshdeep Singh has marked out his run up and Travis Head is waiting at the other end of the wicket as Australia and India get going in Hobart …

Australia have never lost a men’s T20I at Bellerive Oval in Hobart with five wins in all five of the matches they have played there, including against West Indies and Pakistan last year. This is India’s first international at the venue.

India XI

Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah.

Arshdeep Singh and Washington Sundar bolster the India attack as Harshit Rana and Kuldeep Yadav make way. Sanju Samson also falls out of the XI with Jitesh Sharma to take the gloves instead.

Australia XI

Mitchell Marsh (capt), Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Tim David, Mitchell Owen, Marcus Stoinis, Matt Short, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Sean Abbott, Matthew Kuhnemann.

Sean Abbott replaces Josh Hazlewood as Australia are otherwise unchanged from the XI that defeated India in Melbourne on Friday night. Glenn Maxwell is back in the squad but will watch on this evening in Hobart.

Toss

A shock at Bellerive Oval as India finally turn the tables and win the toss for the first time in the series with Suryakumar Yadav electing to field first. The India captain expects the ball to do a bit more during the second innings. Mitch Marsh hides any displeasure with having the bat first by talking up the wicket as a “belter”.

Updated

Preamble

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the third T20 international between Australia and India at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Australia have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after a comfortable four-wicket victory on Friday night in Melbourne, while the first T20I was washed out after 9.4 overs of play.

India have found batting tricky in the 1.25 T20s that have been played in the series with only opener Abhishek Sharma looking especially dangerous, though captain Suryakumar Yadav found some form in the first game and Harshit Rana was amongst the runs in the second. But the tourists will be pleased to see the back of Josh Hazlewood with the Australia quick in imperious form but now leaving the squad to ramp up his preparations for the Ashes.

But in swings and roundabouts, Australia’s already powerful batting lineup will be bolstered by the addition of Glenn Maxwell to the squad as the all-rounder returns from a fractured wrist that has kept him sidelined for more than a month. What that means for the Australia XI will be revealed soon.

First ball will be at 7.15pm AEDT in Hobart / 1.45pm IDT. The toss and team news will be coming up shortly. Meanwhile, let us know your thoughts and predictions - shoot me an email or find me @martinpegan on Bluesky or X. Let’s get into it!
