Aurier, Rose, Alderweireld & Vertonghen out - How Tottenham should line up vs Red Star Belgrade

Tottenham take on FK Crvena Zvezda, otherwise known as Red Star Belgrade, in a must-win Champions League clash on Tuesday.

A draw with Olympiacos was followed up by a 7-2 humbling at the hands of Bayern Munich to leave Spurs with just one point from their opening two group games.

Victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a must, if not to get their Champions League campaign back on track, then to kickstart an ailing campaign overall.

Spurs take on Liverpool in the Premier League after their midweek fixture and a better performance will be welcome ahead of that big clash at Anfield.

We asked our resident Tottenham writers and fans to put together the team they would play if they were in the manager's shoes.

Mauricio Pochettino will shuffle his pack once again as he looks to find the winning formula and he'd be right to.

I'd switch both full-backs and give one of either Alderweireld or Vertonghen a night off as they've struggled together recently. Although Alderweireld has probably been the better of the two across the season so far, playing him and Sanchez doesn't work and doesn't have the balance of a left-footer in there with the Colombian having to move out to a side that's unnatural for him.

I'd also try something a bit different in midfield. Tanguy Ndombele has the passing ability and speed of thought to make a real difference for Spurs in the final third. He takes risks with his dribbling and through balls.

The problem is that while he's adjusting to English football and the way Spurs player he looks absolutely knackered in a box to box role and doesn't track back well enough. So why not free him of the bulk of that defensive responsibility and push him further up the pitch?

Gold's team: Gazzaniga; Foyth, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies; Sissoko, Winks; Lamela, Ndombele, Son; Kane.

Rob Guest - Tottenham writer

Mauricio Pochettino needs to switch things about at the back on Tuesday with the Spurs defence all over the place at the minute.
Juan Foyth should be given his first start of the season at right-back, with Ben Davies coming in on the left after Danny Rose's shocker at the weekend.

The time may be right to give Davinson Sanchez an extended run in the team and Eric Dier should come in to freshen things up with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen struggling for form.

Tanguy Ndombele was very good in the first half against Bayern and hopefully he will be able to catch the eye on the European stage once again alongside Harry Winks.

Christian Eriksen is in contention to start tomorrow after returning to training from his dead leg, although I would start Erik Lamela ahead of him on current form.

Guest's team: Gazzaniga; Foyth, Dier, Sanchez, Davies; Winks, Ndombele; Son, Alli, Lamela; Kane.

Lee Wilmot - Live editor and Tottenham fan

A back-lin of Serge Aurier, Danny Rose, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld just is not working.

None of them want to be there and it has shown in the way they have performed so far this season.

I can understand why Mauricio Pochettino persists, as they should be the best he's got, but given their displays, he should rip it up and start again. That's what I would do and I'd pick a back-line of Kyle Walker-Peters, Juan Foyth, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies on Tuesday night.

Let them see what they can do instead.

Ahead of them, despite the result against Watford, I see no reason to offer Christian Eriksen a route back into the team. I'd have Harry Winks and Tanguy Ndombele in front of the defence, with Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela and Dele Alli in a three behind Harry Kane.

Wilmot's team: Gazzaniga; Walker-Peters, Foyth, Sanchez, Davies; Winks, Ndombele; Alli, Lamela, Son; Kane.
