Aung San Suu Kyi's son has spoken out after his mother, who has been kept in solitary confinement for five years, was seen alive in new photographs.
Myanmar’s former leader was detained in 2021, when the country’s military ousted a democratically elected civilian government led by her in a coup.
Since then, the 81-year-old’s exact whereabouts and health conditions have been difficult to confirm as no foreign leader or envoy had publicly met her.
On Monday (3 August), the 81-year-old was pictured meeting with a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the capital Naypyidaw, a government spokesperson said.
Reacting to the photographs, Kim Aris told The Independent that he feels “relieved” to see his mother is alive, though he is also still “angry that she is being unjustly held”.
