Aubrey Plaza Opens Up About Grief And The ‘Awfulness’ Of Husband Jeff Baena’s Death

CONTENT WARNING: This article discusses mental health issues.

Aubrey Plaza has opened up about her grief following the death of her husband, Jeff Baena.

On Wednesday (local time), actor Amy Poehler released the latest episode of her interview podcast Good Hang and this week, the special guest was her Parks and Recreation co-star.

During the episode, Aubrey, 41, explained the “daily struggle” life has been since losing Baena, whom she had separated from shortly before his passing in January.

“Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you,” the White Lotus star said.

“Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning.”

Despite describing it as a horrible analogy, Aubrey related her grief to the Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy movie, The Gorge, which is about two snipers protecting either side of a huge gorge filled with monsters.

“When I watched it, I swear, that’s what my grief feels like, or what grief could be like,” she explained.

“At all times, there’s, like, a giant ocean of just awfulness that’s just right there, and I can see it. Sometimes I just want to dive into it and be in it. Then sometimes, I just look at it. Sometimes I try to get away from it. But it’s always there.”

Later on in the episode, Amy asked Aubrey a question she puts to all her guests: How do you find laughter in your life?

“A group of my women friends … we have, like, a text chain and we do Zooms and trips and those girls make me laugh really, really hard,” she said.

“We’ve all known each other for so long. That’s the best thing that makes me laugh. My funny friends.”

As you’d expect with these two, the podcast episode was also filled with plenty of moments of laughter, joy and levity. (Image: Good Hang / YouTube)

In case you haven’t seen or listened to Good Hang (which you should, it’s incredible), the format sees Amy reach out to friends of her main guest via Zoom to chat about them, and ask them what questions they’d like to know about their friend.

In this episode, Amy reached out to Aubrey’s friend Margaret Qualley, and it was very wholesome.

Most importantly, the way Amy broached the topic of grief was so kind and filled with the levity that it seemed like Aubrey needed. It was really lovely to listen to.

Aubrey and Jeff had been together for 14 years and got married on their 10th anniversary in a private ceremony at their home. They reportedly split just prior to his passing.

In a statement to Us Weekly, a representative for Plaza said his death was an “unimaginable tragedy”.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time,” the statement read.

In what must be one of the most difficult periods of her life, it’s good to see that Aubrey is doing okay and has supportive friends like Amy around her.
