Atrocity case: Karnataka HC stays proceedings against actor Upendra

BENGALURU: In a big relief for actor Upendra, the Karnataka high court on Monday granted interim stay with regards to proceedings in case registered against him under the Scheduled Castes and Schedule Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 over his alleged derogatory comment in a Facebook live programme.

Justice Hemant Chandanagoudar passed this order afer hearing the petition filed by the actor wherein he had sought for quashing of the proceedings in the complaint filed against him before the Channammanakere Achchukattu police station in Bengaluru city on August 13,2023.

Incidentally, there are two more complaints registered against him over the same issue in two different police stations.

On August 12,2023, in his talk on the Facebook live, while informing the people that criticisms are part of life ,Upendra is used a used proverb in Kannada. The Samatha Sainik Dal complained against the same and an official of the social welfare department registered a police complaint against the actor . Challenging the same, Upendra has claimed that his use of the Kannada proverb had nothing to do with Dalits or he had any intention to insult people belonging to Scheduled castes or Scheduled tribes.

The court was also told that the petitioner had clarified his position and has also rendered an apology as well.
