Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal LIVE: Champions League result, latest updates and fan reaction

LIVE: Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal - (PA)

Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal LIVE

Arsenal will head back to the Emirates Stadium with a 1-1 aggregate scoreline from their Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid. The Gunners were a goal up on the stroke of half time as Viktor Gyokeres emphatically tucked away a penalty after the Swede had been bundled over by David Hancko in the box.

Atleti were themselves awarded a spot-kick in the second half as Marcos Llorente’s strike hit Ben White’s arm, and Julian Alvarez converted from 12 yards to level the scores. Mikel Arteta’s men thought they had themselves a second penalty of the evening as Hancko was once again deemed the guilty party, tripping Eberechi Eze, before the VAR overruled the decision.

The scoreline remained untroubled, and both sides will go again in north London next week. Follow the game back below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Matt Verri.

Does seem strange the way Arteta changes his front three. He's gone from having all the runners on to now having all the more technical players on, but with no real threat in behind. Not a lot of balance

Should never be a penalty, considering it bounced off White's shin and onto his arm, but was always going to be given considering the farcical penalty given for something similar last night.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Arsenal

20:13 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

11 min: Atletico are happy to sit off and allow Arsenal to have the ball. That is a likely ploy as the hosts have been devastating on the counter-attack in the Champions League this season.

Standard Sport's Matt Verri

20:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Really good from Madueke. His end product can be a bit hit and miss but that was a lovely burst into space and a great cross stood up to the back post. Hincapie should done done more with it.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Arsenal

Viktor Gyokeres ended his goal drought with a brace as Arsenal earned a stunning 4-0 win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League earlier in the season.

After both sides struck the crossbar, Gabriel headed home the first of Arsenal's quartet in 13 scintillating second-half minutes.

Gabriel Martinelli added a second with 64 minutes gone before Gyokeres landed a quickfire double in the 67th and 70th minutes to leave Diego Simeone's side shell-shocked.

Seedorf tips Arsenal

19:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Clarence Seedorf has said Arsenal’s ability to defend could make the difference if they reach the Champions League final.

Arsenal will face Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals, with the first leg taking place at the Wanda Metropolitano tonight.

The showdown in the Spanish capital has its work cut out to live up to the excitement of the first semi-final tie after Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich shared nine-goals in a Champions League classic.

Seedorf, though, was not impressed with the defending on show from both sides and has gone as far to tip the Gunners to win the trophy - should they overcome Atletico - due to their ability to keep the opposition out.

Lining up for the home side this evening...

Standard Sport's Matt Verri

18:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arteta has decided to be cautious with the fitness of Saka and Eze, who are both on the bench.

It means Arsenal start with a front three of Madueke, Gyokeres and Martinelli.

Feels a strange call considering how much Arsenal have struggled with that trio in attack previously - there is not a lot of technical security there.

Not hard to imagine the Gunners finding it tough to get up the pitch and control things tonight.

Why Arsenal may be the big winners from PSG vs Bayern thriller

18:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich played out a Champions League classic on Tuesday night, but the biggest winners could have been Arsenal.

The two European elites shared nine goals in a record-breaking semi-final first leg, in what some onlookers have described a throwback to bygone age or an antidote to modern football.

There was no sign of celebrating the winning of a corner, lining up for a long throw or any set-piece trickery, rather just two teams throwing hammer and tong at their opponent to see who came out on top.

But that's not to say everyone would have been happy in the dressing rooms after the game.

Predicted Arsenal XI

18:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Gabriel Martinelli has scored six goals in the Champions League this season and is pushing to start on the left wing, offering more pace on the counter-attack.

Kai Havertz is out with the muscular injury he picked up against Newcastle, though that injury is not believed to be a serious one.

With the German out, Viktor Gyokeres is likely to get the nod to lead the line over Gabriel Jesus.

Predicted Arsenal XI: Raya; Mosquera, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapie; Zubimendi, Rice; Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli; Gyokeres.

Arsenal face 'significant danger' against Atletico as storm brews

18:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Not for the first time this season, Arsenal go into a match needing to give particular thought to the state of a pitch.

That felt par for the course in March when the Gunners turned up at Field Mill to face Mansfield in the FA Cup.

Areas of the pitch had very little grass and others were watered significantly, all part of the fun and games that are baked into a cup tie against lower-league opposition.

It feels far more unnatural to be having these discussions before a Champions League semi-final tie, but the Metropolitano Stadium's surface has proved a difficult opponent in itself over the last few months.

Rewind: Atletico Madrid 1-0

Painful memories for Arsenal from their one and only visit to the Metropolitano Stadium.

This was in a European semi-final too...

Ruthless Mikel Arteta can solve major Arsenal problem against Atletico Madrid

18:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

As Kai Havertz trudged off the pitch, shirt pulled over his face in devastation, the fear was that not just his season was over but potentially Arsenal's too.

While Havertz is understood to have avoided a significant injury and should return from the muscular issue to play some part in the run-in, any absence at this stage of the season is magnified.

He will miss the Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid tonight and that leaves Mikel Arteta with a dilemma.

The leading candidate to start up front - and the man Arteta will almost certainly turn to - is Viktor Gyokeres. However, with the two biggest competitions still there to be won, Arteta needs to be ruthless and consider alternatives.
