At least one person is dead and nine others injured after a gunman rammed his vehicle into the front door of a Mormon church in Michigan, local police said on Sunday.

Authorities added he then set fire to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc.

The shooter, 40, was shot dead by police.

Police Chief William Renye told reporters: “We do believe we will find some additional victims once we find the area where the fire was.”

Smoke was billowing from the building as firefighters sprayed the inferno with water while fire trucks and emergency vehicles were parked nearby, footage on social media showed.

“There are multiple victims and the shooter is down,” the Grand Blanc Township Police Department said in a post on Facebook, urging people to avoid the area.

“There is no threat to the public at this time. The church is actively on fire.”

Further details were not immediately available.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is informally known as the Mormons.

Grand Blanc, a town of 7,700 people, is located about 60 miles northwest of Detroit.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on X, formerly Twitter that she had received briefings on “what appears to be a horrific shooting and fire” at the church.

She added that agents with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on their way to the scene.

Bondi said: “Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling.

“Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy.”

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed in a statement that federal agents are on the way to assist local authorities and called the incident “a cowardly and criminal act”.

Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer said: “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.”
