Astronomy Ireland and experts testing rock to see if 'big bang' in Kilkenny was from Perseid meteor shower

A mysterious "big bang" heard in Kilkenny city on Tuesday night is being linked to the Perseid meteor shower which lit up the sky.

A local in Loughboy near the city has reported a rock in their garden which they believe may have been from the meteor shower.

A bang was heard around 10pm throughout the city with the gardai even getting a number of calls by worried residents in the area.

A number of theories have been floated around in the area with the bang a major talking point.

Now Astronomy Ireland have been alerted to the find and the rock is currently being examined by an expert.

KCLR96fm have been following the incident closely and were told by David Moore of Astronomy Ireland that about two meteor rocks do fall in Ireland each year.

Mr Moore told Sue Nunn on The Way It Is: "On average an island the size of Ireland should get two meteorites landing on the ground every year but the last time we actually found one was back in 1999.

"Actually finds are very rare but falls are very common."

David was forwarded on images of the alleged meteorite which have now been sent on to expert Ian Sanders to further investigate.

Mr Moore added: "I'm not an expert, we've forwarded it on to Dr Ian Sanders who is a geologist in Trinity College who specialises in meteorites.

"He is one of the scientists who did the analysis of the 1999 meteorite which was later proved to be an actual rock for space.

"He's hoping to do an analysis as he's just working off a photo at the moment, we have to warn people we probably get one a week of people contacting us saying they found an interesting rock but in the last 20 years they've all turned out not to be meteorite but meteorwrongs'."

Mr Moore added that it is a promising sign that there was nothing on the ground before the meteor shower and then it was there after the shower.
