Aston Villa legend reacts to late disallowed goal against Crystal Palace

Aston Villa legend Ian Taylor has reacted to the controversial decision to disallow a late Villa equaliser on Saturday.

Palace were leading by one goal to nil thanks to Jordan Ayew's second half strike against his former club, but the newly promoted side thought that they had salvaged a point when Henri Lansbury tucked away a loose ball in the area. However, celebrations were curtailed by the referee's whistle, after he adjudged Jack Grealish to have dived in the build-up to the goal.

Having blown his whistle before the goal was scored, the referee's intervention meant that the newly introduced VAR couldn't overturn the decision and award a goal.

The decision was met with anger from Villa fans and players, and now Ian Taylor has given his thoughts on the events.

"Hard to take," he wrote on his Instagram account. "Yellow cards for nothing fouls, disallowed goal. We weren’t at our best but the whole ground wondered why the goal didn’t stand.

"Bitter pill but we keep going."

Before the disallowed goal, Villa found themselves down to 10 men after Trezeguet picked up two yellow cards.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith admitted in his post-match press conference that he thought the goal should have stood, meaning that his team would have taken a valuable point from the game.

"Good goal, I think everyone else thought it was a good goal, and I can't understand how it hasn't been given," he said.
