AMRITSAR: Former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the namesake wife of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Navjot Singh Sidhu, on Tuesday said she still felt her husband is the most suitable candidate to be the Congress party's chief ministerial face.
Campaigning in Sidhu's Amritsar East assembly constituency, Navjot said, "There is no criteria for putting a person at such a high position. I think only your particulars, like merits, education, work, honesty and all these things, should be counted".
Stressing that her husband's Punjab Model would have brought the state out of misery within six months, she said: "Irrespective of him being my husband, I would have never vouched for him if he was not capable. I believe that his Punjab Model is so good that within six months, Punjab would have been out of this (present mess)."
She also answered in the affirmative when asked whether party leader Rahul Gandhi was misled before he announced the party's CM face.
On the other hand, the Punjab PCC chief claimed that his income had gone down drastically over the past few years. "I used to earn Rs 20 crore to Rs 30 crore in a year, but now my income has come down to just Rs 60,000-Rs 70,000, which we get from the rent of showrooms which we had purchased in 1995. My wife makes ends meet with this income," he said.
He said he wasn't regretful since he was fighting what he described as a 'rashtriya dharam yudh' (national fight) and neither he nor his wife demanded anything in return. "Hamay watan sae ishq hai (we love our nation)," he said.
