Asics apologises after porn is 'played for nine hours' on screens in flagship store

Sports company Asics has apologised after screens outside a flagship store in New Zealand showed pornography for "nine hours".

The adult material was played in Auckland on the store's outdoor promotional screens above the entrance until staff arrived at 10am on Sunday to open up.

Hackers had gained access to the system to show explicit content, the Japanese sports company said.

In a Facebook statement, the firm said: "We would like to apologise to anyone who may have seen this.

"We are working with our software and online security suppliers to ensure this doesn't happen again."

The statement added: "An unknown person gained access to the screens above our central Auckland store and some objectionable content was displayed on the screens."

Pornographic content had been playing on the screens for nine hours until it was turned off by staff, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Security officer Dwayne Hinango said: "Some people were shocked, but others just stopped and watched."

Tanya Lee, a mother who was on her way to breakfast with her 7-year-old son, told the Herald: "It was totally inappropriate and offensive.

"I took a second look because I just couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"It's not something you want kids exposed to and it's also embarrassing for Auckland as a tourist destination."

In a media statement, Asics said: "The Shortland St store was subject to a cybersecurity breach.

"We are currently investigating the situation and working to mitigate it happening again in future.

"We sincerely apologise to those who saw the content."
