Asian Cup crack behind Matilda's A-League Women move

Chloe Logarzo Berryhill has joined Western Sydney in her last-ditch bid to make the Matildas' Asian Cup squad before finishing her professional career.

The midfielder, formerly a Sydney FC stalwart, was at Western United before a short, fruitless stint at Como 1907.

Logarzo, 30, was a Matildas regular before tearing her ACL in September 2021, which kicked off a horror run of injuries that led to her missing the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Olympics.

The hard-running midfielder, who starred at the 2019 Women's World Cup and was an Olympian in 2016 and 2021, has been able to return to the fringes of the Matildas but has rarely played in recent years.

Getting regular minutes is crucial if she is to crack a spot under Joe Montemurro, with Tameka Yallop's recent hamstring injury potentially opening the door for another midfielder ahead of March's home tournament.

"I came home to give myself the best opportunity to try and make the Asian Cup team," Logarzo Berryhill said in a statement.

"And for me, that's just about playing as many minutes as I can in front of Joe and do what I can.

"And if I am meant to be selected in the team, then I'll get selected. But if not, I'm going to keep working hard, put my head down, and give what I can to this club and my career in a positive note."

Logarzo hails from Western Sydney and indicated she planned to finish her career there.

"Obviously, I need to come home to try and get some game time before the Asian Cup," added Logarzo Berryhill.

"But mostly it was to be around my family to enjoy my football as this is my last year of playing and I really want to have a full-circle moment, come back to Sydney where I I grew up and be around specific people like Alen Stajcic and Amy Harrison, and Liv Price and Sham Khamis.

"My aspirations for the remainder of the season is just to be able to slot in and help the girls, keep trending in an upward direction."

Logarzo will give crucial midfield drive and goal scoring power to the 10th-placed Wanderers, who have long been in the ALW doldrums.

"Chloe's signing is another clear sign of intent for our women's program," coach Geoff Abrahams said.

"... Chloe is extremely motivated, fit, and ready to make an immediate impact for the Wanderers.

"Her arrival not only strengthens our squad on the field but also lifts the standards and expectations across our program."
