Asda to launch its first ever loyalty club as supermarket prepares for UK takeover

Britain’s second largest grocer is set to launch the first loyalty club in its 72-year history as it prepares for a multi-billion takeover with new UK owners the Issa brothers.

The chain, which is currently owned by Walmart, is reportedly set to trial a new scheme this year as the country recovers from lockdown.

The loyalty club, first revealed by The Sun, will offer shoppers money off groceries in stores and online.

It will be an upgrade of 'George Rewards' - which incentivises customers who purchase goods from its clothing line.

Details of how it will operate have been kept under wraps, although it's understood that it will not replicate the grocer's Christmas Savings Card which allows shoppers to save and earn cash rewards in the run up to December.

The scheme is likely to be available digitally via a smartphones app.

A source told the publisher: “It would be a move welcomed by customers.

“Other supermarket giants have loyalty card schemes and it allows shoppers to rack up savings throughout the year.

“Asda is already very competitively priced and this way money will go even further for hardworking families.”

In March 2019, Asda launched its George Rewards scheme offering shoppers one point for every £1 spent.

The points can be exchanged for discounts in stores and online.

An Asda spokesman said: “For over 50 years we’ve driven loyalty with our customers by offering great value and range on the things that matter most to them - and whenever we have anything new to share, we tell them about it first.”

The announcement comes just days after rival Morrisons revealed it is axing its More loyalty card in May – seven years after launching to rival Big Four giants Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

The supermarket chain said the scheme will be withdrawn this spring in exchange for a new personalised incentive that will offer money-off vouchers via its app.

Morrisons said shoppers will no longer be able to collect points in stores and online from May 10, although deadlines to use existing points will be in place until August.

Through the current scheme, spenders currently earn five points on every £1 spent - with 5,000 points equivalent to a £5 voucher.

But from May 10, points will be withdrawn and coupons will instead be available via the Morrisons More app.
