Asda Supercentres voted best UK supermarket in lockdown for unusual reason

Asda Supercentres have been voted the UK’s best supermarkets in lockdown - for a rather unusual reason.

New research has found that Asda Supercentres are the stores in the UK for those looking for a daily exercise boost in lockdown.

It found Asda shoppers could expect to walk up to 506 steps in an average Supercentre visit because they're so big.

Following close behind is Tesco Extra, which will see you walk 392 steps on average, and Waitrose Food and Home, which will see you walk 372.

The findings - conducted by fitness equipment specialists Sweatband - are based on six factors, including size of store, product range, queuing time, trolley fill, store layout and staff availability.

These factors were considered in calculating how many steps someone takes while doing their essential shopping.

The worst supermarket for people looking to boost their exercise with daily tasks was found to be Marks & Spencer Simply Food, while in the battle of the budget stores, Lidl came out on top versus Aldi, largely owing to its bigger size and greater product range.

It comes as an accompanying survey found that one in three people’s only form of exercise during lockdown is going to the supermarket.

A further 48 per cent said that going to the supermarket was their only form of human interaction, while one in five (21 per cent) go to the grocery store purely for something to do.

Ruth Stone, ambassador for Sweatband, said: “While this study is a little bit tongue-in-cheek, it was alarming to find that going to the supermarket is many people’s only form of daily exercise.

"It’s so important to keep active, particularly in lockdown, even if that only means taking 10 minutes out of your day to walk around the park.”
