Asda shoppers given urgent warning after John West recalls popular tuna product

Food giant John West has recalled one of its tuna products after it was discovered it contained allergens not listed on the label. The Indian Tuna Rice Salad from the fish specialist's On The Go range was supplied to Asda and shoppers have been warned to check if they have any in their cupboards.

A statement on John West's website says: "On 30 September 2022, John West started a recall of On The Go – Indian Tuna Rice Salad 220g that has been mislabelled. As a result, the ingredients declaration and contents on the sleeve does not match with the product, which contains undeclared allergens soy, gluten and wheat. The products affected were supplied to Asda only.

"Based on our latest findings an extremely small number of products have been mislabelled. The safety of our products and the wellbeing of consumers is our highest priority."

The statement goes on to say that the packs would have been bought in Asda stores on or after 19 August 2022. They can be identified on the back of the foil bowl with the letters “BAS.” The affected products with the letters “BAS” have a ‘best before’ date of June 2025. If you have a pack which is labelled “CURRY”, it is not being recalled and is safe to eat.

The product poses a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya, and/or coeliac disease, an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.

John West has apologised to customers and provided Asda with posters for their affected stores to alert shoppers and anyone who needs to can return the product to the store where they bought it from for a full refund. Products can be recalled for lots of different reasons - for example, this could be down to possible contamination, misleading or incorrect labels or, as in this case, allergens.

If you've bought a product that's been recalled, you have the right to a refund thanks to the Consumer Rights Act. The retailer that sold it should offer you a full refund, even if it's been in your cupboard or freezer for a while. Even if you've already consumed the product or thrown it away, you are still entitled to a refund if you can provide proof of purchase such as a receipt, bank statement, or online order confirmation.
