Asda, Evri, and Channel 4 help give this city the highest average salary for workers outside London

If you are looking to leave London in search of somewhere cheaper, Adzuna has found a city with the best-paying jobs outside the capital.

The website looked at average salaries across one million jobs to rank Leeds as number one, where an average salary is £37,800, and there are 36,000 vacancies.

First Direct, Yorkshire Bank, Asda, Evri, and Channel 4 all have offices in the West Yorkshire city, while the canals and famous markets can make it a great place to work. It also has fast train links to London.

The Northern city is a media hub for Channel 4 shows, with presenters, like Steph McGovern, filming there.

Cambridge, Bristol, and Manchester were respectively second, third, and fourth on the list.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: “Job-seeking doesn’t need to be a postcode lottery. Those looking for lucrative work could start by searching in postcode areas with higher average pay cheques, and our data shows areas like Leeds and Manchester are great options.”

Adzuna found that the technology and life science sites that have popped up around Cambridge, in 'Silicon Fen' areas such as Cambridge North and Milton, have added to the average wages taken home by residents. The city has an average salary of £37,692.

Bristol has also become a tech and innovation centre, and can boast an average salary of £37,281. Manchester, meanwhile, has brands such as Co-Operative Group, AutoTrader, and ITV, as well as the BBC's MediaCity, while there are also major hubs for Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

London’s Square Mile financial district still boasts the highest salary, at £56,497. Tourists in the area have led to pubs opening daily for the first time, Fullers has recently said.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the remote Outer Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland, has the lowest average salary at £17,428, while in Telford, people are paid only £24,723.

Mr Hunter added: “It can pay to look a little further afield when considering a new role, even if you don’t want to move location. For remote workers, focusing the job search on areas at the top of the salary charts could help you bag a pay rise, while considering a commute could mean a salary lift for those working in the office.”

Meanwhile, Leeds was recently in the news after the city centre was evacuated for fear that a crane could collapse.
