Asda, Aldi and Lidl's rules on touching things in stores

In a press conference last week, Boris Johnson said: "This disease can be passed on not just by standing too near to someone in a supermarket queue, but also by handling something touched by an infected person.

"And remember one in three have no symptoms. Washing your hands now is as important as it has ever been."

He continued: "When you are buying loose foods such as fruit, vegetables, or bread in a bakery, try and only touch what you are going to buy."

After the statement, some shoppers were left confused about what they should touch.

Here's what Aldi and Asda has to say about touching products in stores.

Asda

The Asda website says: "Please touch less where you can."

Aldi

Last year Aldi asked shoppers only to touch trolleys they intend to use. There is no guidance on touching produce.

Lidl

Lidl says: "Whilst we always urge customers to use the tongs provided in our bakery, as a temporary measure, you’ll also notice there are disposable gloves for you to use in order to bag loose items yourself, safely. We're continuing to monitor this area of our store, and will change the way we’re doing things if necessary."

Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's don't currently appear to have any guidance about touching products or trolleys in supermarkets.

Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, told the Sun: "Sage data has always highlighted that retail is a safe environment.

"Supermarkets continue to follow all safety guidance and customers should be reassured that supermarkets are Covid-secure and safe to visit during lockdown and beyond.

"The FSA is clear that the risk of Covid-19 transmission through food or packaging is negligible.

"Nonetheless, customers should take established safety precautions – wear a face covering, do not touch your face, and wash your hands regularly."
