Arts space The Horse Hospital at risk after 333 per cent rent rise

An underground arts space is at risk of closure after being threatened with a 333 per cent rent rise.

The Horse Hospital in Bloomsbury has provided support for independent artists since it opened in 1993, displaying work from artists including Tai Shani and designer Vivienne Westwood.

But its future was thrown into doubt last month after landlords Evannance Investments proposed the annual rent should increase from £30,000 to £130,000 from next year.

Roger Burton, who opened the Horse Hospital, told the Standard the rise was “way over” what the not-for-profit could afford and has launched a campaign to keep it open. Ifan Evans, a director of Evannance Investments, said: “We’re just trying to get a fair rent.”
