Artemis II Moon mission’s mascot designed by student

  • NASA's Artemis II mission is scheduled to launch four astronauts around the Moon, marking the first such endeavour in over 50 years.
  • The mission will include 'Rise', a softball-sized moon plushie designed by a Californian elementary student, which will act as a zero-gravity indicator.
  • 'Rise' also carries a MicroSD card with the names of 5.6 million people and wears a cap inspired by the iconic Earth rise photo from the Apollo 8 mission.
  • The Artemis II crew is set to make history, including the first woman, first Black man, and first non-US citizen to journey to the Moon.
  • This mission is the second of five planned flights in NASA's Artemis programme, which aims to land astronauts on the Moon and establish a lunar base.
