Arsonists attack empty Stockport school as firefighters battle blaze

Police are investigating after arsonists torched an empty Stockport school.

Twenty firefighters tackled the blaze at the former Offerton High School in Fairway.

Flames were spotted coming from the building at about 9.30pm last night.

A brigade spokeswoman said: "The fire was contained to one classroom. The room and the roof were damaged. Crews using six breathing apparatus and three hose reels tackled the fire.

"The most likely cause is deliberate and details have been passed to Greater Manchester Police. The fire service are now working with police and the council to make the site safe."

All the buildings of the 1960s school remain despite its closure in 2012.

The decision to close the school was first considered in October 2009 due to falling pupil numbers.

The council argued that, despite a glowing Ofsted report, the school was not financially viable and pupils needs could be better met at other local schools.

After public consultation and a campaign to save the school by parents, the final decision to close it was approved by the council in January 2011.  Parents had gathered over 1,000 signatures against closure.

The school originally opened at Goyt Bank High School for Girls in 1960.

In 1964 Stockport Technical High School moved to The Fairway and in 1972 the schools merged into Goyt Bank School. In 1982 Goyt Bank merged with Dialstone Lane and was renamed Offerton High.

The empty building has attracted urban explorers with videos of its vacant classrooms, corridors, and changing rooms appearing on YouTube.

Part of the school site now houses Castle Hill High School, a special school that was relocated from Brinnington.

Earlier this year plans were revealed for a new allocation of housing on green space behind the former Offerton High School.

They are part of a masterplan for Greater Manchester's future housing.

A paper did not state how many properties the site will deliver, but they will stretch across the old playing fields and green space around the Dialstone sports centre.

The development will provide 40pc 'affordable' housing with access from the Fairway and Curzon Road and junction improvements and traffic calming measures included.

However, the report states there are plans to provide additional special educational needs places in a new building, on the site, by extending existing special school.
