Arson probe launched in Winlaton after door of a home is set alight

An arson probe has been launched after the door of a home was torched.

Severe damage was caused to the property on Lime Street, in Winlaton, Gateshead, but no one was injured.

The blaze broke out at around 10.15pm on Sunday.

Police, who believe the fire was started deliberately, are now appealing for witnesses.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “The fire brigade were called and extinguished the fire before it could cause extensive damage. Thankfully no one was injured during the incident.

“Enquiries were immediately launched by officers and witnesses reported seeing a man running down Lime Street, away from the address, and towards Shibdon Bank around the time of the fire.”

The man is described as wearing a blue hooded jacket with the hood up and light grey tracksuit trousers.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference number 1114 03/04/16.
