Arsene Wenger calls on UEFA to make rule change that would affect Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes UEFA should get rid of the away goals rule.

Wenger made the suggestion ahead of Chelsea's Champions League last 16 first-leg clash against the Bundesliga giants on Tuesday night.

The Frenchman, who is global football development chief at FIFA, recently came up with a plan to remove some of the farce surrounding VAR and offside in the game.

Wenger is keen to see players be ruled onside if any part of their body that can score a goal is in line with the last defender, even if other parts are in front.

And although that suggestion was met with mixed views, his one on the away goals rule is likely to receive more support.

"You play at home by thinking every goal you concede, you are half out,” Wenger told BeinSports.

“Sometimes I feel that this away goal becomes a big handicap when you play your first game at home because you have to attack with keeping a certain security and not giving away too much."

Before the Frenchman added: “I proposed that for a long time. To get rid of the away goal at least until you go into extra-time because the weight of the away goal is too big in the modern game.

“It’s not justifiable anymore. That [was brought in at] a time when away from home there was no television, they would kick you off the park, the pitches were bad.

“I think it [scraping away goals until extra-time] would be a good decision.”
