Arsenal urged to complete 'perfect' Cristiano Ronaldo transfer despite Edu window stance

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has urged his former club to sign Cristiano Ronaldo following his release from Manchester United. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is currently without a club in the aftermath of his explosive TV interview with Piers Morgan last week.

Ronaldo's future at Old Trafford had been in doubt for some time after a number of incidents this season and his interview on TalkTV last week was ultimately the final nail in the coffin. United were said to be 'furious' with Ronaldo after the interview after the 37-year-old claimed that he felt betrayed by the club.

United confirmed on Tuesday evening that they had mutually agreed to let the striker leave with immediate effect, putting an end to his second spell at the club. Ronaldo made 346 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 145 goals and assisting a further 64, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

As Ronaldo prepares to kick off his World Cup campaign today with Portugal, many clubs have been tipped to sign the legendary forward, including Arsenal. The Gunners sit top of the Premier League after their sensational start to the season and are hoping to improve Mikel Arteta's squad in January.

Despite the signing not fitting into Arsenal's transfer strategy over recent windows, Seaman has urged the Gunners to swoop in to sign Ronaldo to add more firepower to their frontline. "Ronaldo is far from done, and he would be perfect for Arsenal," he told TalkTV.

"He's been all around the world and seen how everywhere has progressed, and he comes back to his beloved Man United, and nothing has changed.

"There was a lot of stuff in the interview that I didn't know about the way he had been treated."

Whilst the thought of having Ronaldo at the Emirates may appeal to some Arsenal supporters, Edu's comments in the summer point towards an explanation as to why they are likely to stay clear. "Part of the plan is when you are starting to sell the players, that's the challenging one," Edu told football.london. "You already need someone prepared. [If we can then] sell, [and if] we are able to do that and then chapeau. It's very challenging.

"For example, let's talk about next season or another. If we sell, I don't know, Bukayo Saka - that's not going to happen, but it's just an example. If we're going to sell Bukayo Saka, we as a club have to prepare his replacement straight away. So someone has to be in the squad, or we have to manage the market well, so if we sell, we have him, we have someone straight away to replace him in our model."
