Arsenal told Mauricio Pochettino 'would' join as Unai Emery's replacement despite Spurs ties

Jamie Redknapp says he believes Mauricio Pochettino's five-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur would not stop him from joining Arsenal.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for the former Spurs boss, with Unai Emery under huge pressure.

Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Southampton at the weekend left the north London side eight points adrift of the top four, and meant the Gunners have won just two of their last 11 Premier League games under Emery.

Pochettino has established himself as of the most sought-after coaches in world football after leading Tottenham to four successive top-four finishes, and the Champions League final last season.

However, with Spurs' poor start to the season, the Argentine was sacked last week and replaced with Jose Mourinho.

With the 47-year-old now available, former Tottenham midfielder and now pundit Redknapp believes Arsenal should take the opportunity.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: "If I was a decision maker at Arsenal, I’d go for Mauricio Pochettino in a heartbeat.

"I’m not sure I believe Poch would let his time with Tottenham stop him from taking over. Maybe the reason Spurs decided to go for Jose Mourinho so suddenly was they felt they could not hang around, because their north London rivals might be searching for a new boss soon.

"Unai Emery is under big, big pressure. I have some sympathy for him but he looks a beaten man."

After Arsenal's draw with Southampton, Emery admitted he could understand why the fans booed his side off at full-time.

"I understand the supporters are angry and frustrated,’ he said.

"The players are feeling the same and my job is to find out how to improve and the key is to be with the supporters. Our target was to win but also to play well and we didn’t do that."

The Gunners host Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday night, before travelling to Norwich at the weekend.
