Arsenal superfan Jeremy Corbyn urges respect at trophy parade as Met Police warns troublemakers face arrest

Jeremy Corbyn issued an appeal for people to show respect to each other at the Arsenal trophy parade which is expected to be attended by at least 500,000 fans.

The Gunners superfan and ex-Labour leader predicted that the event in north London was going to be a “great party”.

In a video message ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League final on Saturday and the parade on Sunday, he said: “Really enjoy it when you come.

“Treat each other with respect, treat everybody else with respect.

“Make sure there's no problems and no danger.”

The Islington North MP also urged people to do their bit to prevent huge quantities of litter being left on the north London borough’s streets.

“Do us a favour, put it in the bin or take it home with you,” he stressed, explaining how these small actions would make the work of the borough’s cleaning workers far easier.

He has also raised Arsenal’s Premier League title triumph in Parliament.

In a Commons motion, he named the team’s wonderkid Max Dowman and captain Martin Odegaard, as well as praising the other players and the club’s staff including the cleaners and caterers.

Earlier, the Met Police warned football thugs that they will be swiftly dealt with if they try to disrupt the trophy parade.

More than 500 officers will be deployed alongside specialist drone and search teams so the expected huge crowds, predicted to number at least 500,000, are kept safe.

The turnout could swell towards one million, according to some estimates.

“The parade is an opportunity for Arsenal supporters to celebrate, and we want everyone attending to enjoy the day safely,” said Commander Stuart Bell, leading the Met’s public order operation this weekend.

On the possibility of public disorder, he added: “Officers will respond to incidents where necessary.

“We expect the vast majority of those attending on Sunday to do so safely and responsibly.

“However, anti-social behaviour, violence or any other type of criminality will not be tolerated.

“Officers will take action against anyone attempting to cause disruption or harm.”

Earlier in the week, Arsenal gave details of the route for their Premier League, and potentially Champions League, trophy parade.

If they beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on Saturday, the parade is expected to be a stratospheric celebratory event.

The Gunners were crowned Premier League champions for the first time since 2004 this season, and finally got their hands on the trophy after beating Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on the final day of the season.

The four-bus parade will make a loop around Islington, encircling the Emirates Stadium, beginning and ending on the Holloway Road before turning onto Seven Sisters Road.

It will then follow Blackstock Road before turning onto Mount Grove Road, Green Lanes, and Petherton Road.

Continuing southbound, the parade, which is expected to last around two hours, will turn onto Beresford Road before following through to Newington Green Road and Essex Road.

It will then bend back to the north, following Upper Street back to its junction with the Holloway Road.

There will not be a trophy lift along the route as the buses will move continuously.

The men’s first team will occupy the first of the four buses, with their staff on the second, the women’s team on the third and supporters from Arsenal’s community programmes on the fourth.

The grounds surrounding the Emirates Stadium and the road connecting it to the Holloway Road will be closed to pedestrians.

With preparations for the parade starting on Saturday, Scotland Yard and Arsenal are asking supporters not to gather at the Emirates Stadium, particularly in the evening, as this could delay essential safety checks and impact the delivery of the parade the following day.

The stadium, Drayton Park and the surrounding roads will be closed throughout the parade and will not be accessible to the public.

Supporters are being encouraged not to congregate around the stadium area, Hornsey Road, Benwell Road, or Drayton Park as they will not see the parade from these locations.

Further information, including details of the route and local road closures, can be found on the Arsenal website.
