Arsenal starlet Vontae Daley-Campbell impresses scouts in FA Youth Cup win

As the Premier League youth academies become an increasingly rich seam for European giants to exploit, an FA Youth Cup tie can now be considered a shop window for stars of the future.

A 2-0 third-round win over Northampton Town, on the same night as a Champions League matchday, may go down as somewhat of a non-event, but for Vontae Daley-Campbell it was a chance to prove to the watching academy chief Pert Mertesacker and his suitors on the continent why he is such a highly regarded talent.

Standard Sport revealed in September that a quartet of major European sides were tracking the right-back, who is still to be offered professional terms by Arsenal but is viewed by Schalke and RB Leipzig as a player worthy of comparison with Kyle Walker.

They are not the only Bundesliga giants enamoured with Daley-Campbell. Standard Sport understands scouts from Werder Bremen and Freiburg were in attendance at Meadow Park to monitor the England Under-18 international.

For the Walker comparisons, there is also more than a shade of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold to Daley-Campbell, who is as at ease stepping infield and passing on his left as he is bombing on down the right. These are early days in his career but the ingredients are there, even if rivals seem to have taken more notice than some at Arsenal.

Though leaving his boyhood club would be no formality, interest from top continental sides comes at a pivotal time for Daley-Campbell, who has seen central midfielder James Olayinka preferred to him on the right flank of Freddie Ljungberg’s U23 side and has largely been confined to the U18s.

With Brexit looming large for European clubs looking to pick up under-18 bargains in the British market - and vice-versa - there appears to be a growing sense of urgency about continental side’s pursuit of youth talent. The scouting seats at Borehamwood were overflowing with observers from England and beyond, each eager to lay claim to the next Jadon Sancho or Reiss Nelson.

Even though the brightest young prospects in the Hale End setup have been co-opted by Unai Emery for his final Europa League group game - Tyreece John-Jules, Bukayo Saka and Zech Medley are among those set to join the squad against Qarabag - there was much to catch the eye.

The Cobblers’ proactive approach handed Daley-Campbell a challenging assignment but one the 18-year-old rose to in attack and defence. A delicate ball over the top worthy of Alexander-Arnold released Sam Greenwood after two minutes and the former Sunderland striker ought to have done better than a tame slice at the ball.

The 18-year-old’s reading of the game has improved greatly since he was given a thorough going over by Calum Hudson-Odoi in last season’s FA Youth Cup Final and a crucial intervention at the back post denied Northampton the opener midway through the first half.

Even after Folarin Balogun pounced on a rare error from the Northampton backline to hand Arsenal the lead the Cobblers poured forward, Morgan Roberts’ fizzing low free-kick drawing a smart save from Karl Hein.

The visitors should have been level on the hour when Roberts cut-back from the byline was tamely skewered into the goalkeeper’s path by substitute Jack Daldy.

Not until Zak Swanson’s mishit cross looped over goalkeeper Bradley Lashley in the 78th minute could Ken Gilliard’s side breathe easily as they look to go one better than last year’s defeat in the final. Their progress will be keenly observed at Hale End and beyond.
