Arsenal star Beth Mead repeats Vivianne Miedema feat amid Harry Kane prediction

Arsenal star Beth Mead has followed on from her teammate and partner Vivianne Miedema in becoming the latest recipient of the BBC's Women's Footballer of the Year award.

Miedema, 26, who is currently on personal leave with the Gunners approving this request, won the 2021 edition of the award and her partner Mead has followed up to scoop the same award in 2022.

"I don't think I've quite processed it yet. It's a huge honour for me," Mead told BBC Sport upon receiving her award at Arsenal's London Colney training ground. "I've just been enjoying my football this season and for me, these are nice trophies to get hold of, but again, I continue to keep saying it and it's becoming a cliche now, but I wouldn't have got these without my team-mates throughout the season at Arsenal, throughout the season for the international team."

The 27-year-old who has so far netted 29 goals in her 49 England caps, was a huge part of Sarina Wiegman's squad that brought it home over the summer with the European Championships success.

In that tournament, the former Sunderland prospect became the Golden Boot winner, Player of the Tournament and Top Assist Provider at the same time. No wonder that alongside her 11 Women's Super League goals netted last term for the Gunners, she did come out this time on top against the likes of Chelsea's Sam Kerr and Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas.

"Playing in your own country in those types of competitions, it's what you dream of, so to come away and win it was incredible and I think a feeling that will live with us for our lifetimes," Mead reflected.

Mead, who already has nine goal contributions in all competitions during the early parts of the 2022-23 campaign, could yet end the year with more success as the latest odds indicate that she is the favourite to win the 2022 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award ahead of Tottenham's Harry Kane and Lionesses teammate Alessia Russo.

And verdicts delivered by the now-retired Ellen White and Arsenal teammate Leah Williamson will help the 27-year-old in her quest to land the award that tennis star Emma Raducanu won in 2021.

White said: "I think she can go on to score so many goals for England, the sky is the limit for her.

"What she's achieved in her career so far, and her development, the way that she's so focused on her performance, and what she's doing at Arsenal, I think it's incredible and it bodes well for the England team."

"I've looked up to Beth. What you see is what you get with her she's had a great year and I'm glad she's got the recognition because these are the moments we play for," Williamson added.

"When a forward's on fire, like she was during that tournament, it's a good feeling for the team, because you know that as long as you play well enough the time will come or the moment will come. She's been a force of nature for England over the last 12 months."
