Arsenal set to miss out on £9m transfer windfall after major Mikel Arteta decision

The father of Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has confirmed that the Egyptian is set to stay at the Emirates Stadium until the end of the campaign despite reported transfer interest.

It has been reported that Galatasaray are interested in doing a deal for the midfielder, having seen him fall down the pecking order in north London.

He was sent out on-loan to Turkish outfit Besiktas during the 2019/20 campaign, whilst he has made just five outings including two starts during the current campaign for the Gunners.

Despite the rumours revolving around Elneny’s potential exit from the club, his father has insisted that Mikel Arteta has made the decision to keep the 29-year-old at the Emirates Stadium until the end of his contract.

Talking to Shams TV, Elneny senior said: “Arteta wants Mohamed to stay. He might need him in the coming period so he will remain until the end of the season.

“I hope that he will end his career at Al Ahly,”

With Elneny now looking set to stay in north London, Arsenal could well be set to lose out on a considerable windfall should they otherwise have let him leave in January.

He is out of contract at the end of the season so would be able to leave the club on a free transfer. That is despite Elneny being valued at approximately £9m by transfermarkt at the current time.

Alongside reports of a potential switch to Galatasaray, there were even further suggestions that Arsenal could release the midfielder from the remainder of his contract in order to facilitate a move.

Arsenal boss Arteta refused to divulge any details on his future when probed ahead of this weekend’s clash with Liverpool.

He said: “I’m really happy with Mo. If not I would be discussing individually all the players and it’s not the time to do so.”

Elneny has made 135 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions since joining from Swiss outfit Basel in 2016, claiming a solitary FA Cup winners’ medal.
