Arsenal make transfer deadline day approach for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey

Arsenal have made a last-ditch attempt to sign Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.

Mikel Arteta wants to strengthen in the middle of the park before tonight's 11pm deadline and The Gunners are attempting to get a deal over the line.

Arsenal have been linked with Partey throughout the summer but there seemed to be an acceptance that the deal would not happen as the deadline got closer.

However, talks are ongoing with just hours remaining before the window slams shut - although the race against the clock means it will be difficult for an agreement to be struck.

The Londoners are reportedly ready to pay Partey's release clause, meaning only personal terms would need to be agreed.

Those shouldn't be an issue, with Partey set to substantially increase his current Atletico salary - having stalled on an improved deal in the Spanish capital.

Arsenal have made a decent start to the season, winning three of their opening four Premier League fixtures and reaching the last eight of the Carabao Cup.

But they only edged out struggling Sheffield United by one goal on Sunday, and Arteta admitted after the game he was still hopeful of incomings.

"I am confident we know exactly what we want to do, that we are all trying our best to finalise the deals that we want," he said.

"Whether that is sending people on loan or bringing someone in, we have complete connection between myself, Edu, the board and the ownership, let's see what happens in the next 36 hours."

Partey has established himself as a mainstay in the Atletico side having spent the last five seasons in the Spanish capital.

He has scored 16 goals in 188 games, helping Diego Simeone's men to the Champions League final in 2016 and the Europa League title in 2018.

The 27-year-old has also featured 27 times internationally for Ghana.
