Arsenal make sponsorship decision following controversial comments from Rwanda president

Arsenal have renewed their sleeve sponsorship deal with Visit Rwanda, football.london understands.

The Gunners signed a three-year sponsorship deal in 2018 worth more than £30million. with the 'Visit Rwanda' logo displayed on their shirt sleeve.

A new four year deal will run until 2025 and football.london understands that it's worth up to £10million a year.

However, some have levelled criticism at the deal suggesting that it is an example of an authoritarian government subsidising a wealthy football club.

Rwanda president Paul Kagame has previously been outspoken on Arsenal via social media, criticising owner Stan Kroenke with his most recent rant coming after the Gunners' opening Premier League game of the season defeat to Brentford.

President Kagame has received criticism both in his own country and abroad over his political and human rights record.

In 2018 the landlocked country was praised by the World Bank for "achieving impressive development gains since the 1994 genocide and civil war."

As part of the partnership, Arsenal players from the men's and women's teams have visited Rwanda and club coaches have hosted coaching camps to support the development of the game for boys and girls in the country.

Rwanda's tourist board also sponsor Paris Saint-Germain, promoting the 'Visit Rwanda' slogan on its women’s team kit, men's training kit and in the club’s stadium.
