Arsenal line up 'Mikel Arteta replacement' who could secure Lautaro Martinez transfer

Arsenal have reportedly lined up Antonio Conte as 'Mikel Arteta's replacement' with the Spaniard's future up in the air.

The Gunners boss has come under intense scrutiny following the north London club's 2-0 defeat to Brentford on Friday night in their Premier League opener.

It's the worst possible start after Arsenal failed to qualify for Europe for the first time in 25 years last season and it could go from bad to worse with Chelsea and Manchester City up next.

And reports in Italy claim that Arsenal could make the move for Conte who is out of work since leaving Inter Milan last term after guiding them to the Serie A title.

Tottenham held talks with the former Chelsea boss over the summer, but Conte turned them down over concerns that they wouldn't be able to challenge for silverware.

Tuttosport also claims that if Conte took the job at Arsenal, he could help secure a move for Lautaro Martinez who is a target for the Gunners this summer as they look for a new striker.

Martinez was in terrific form under Conte last season as he scored 19 goals in all competitions for the San Siro club.

The Argentina striker has been linked with a switch to Arsenal and Spurs during the transfer window.

Arteta admitted he was ‘disappointed’ by Arsenal’s defeat to Brentford and that his side didn't deserve anything from the game.

He said: "We started the season against a good opponent.

"I don’t think we deserved anything different. They scored from a long throw-in and we didn’t have enough presence in the box.

"The first goal gave them some hope. We wanted to play better in the second half but we need many more shots on target, then we conceded on a set-piece.

"A lot of young boys were doing everything they can. For some of them it was the first experience in the league – that says a lot. What I can control and help, I’ll put all my enthusiasm and work into that."
