Raphael Varane will succeed at Manchester United and form an 'excellent duo' with Harry Maguire, according to former Arsenal and France international Robert Pires.
Varane is on the verge of completing a move to Old Trafford from Real Madrid, with Manchester United having nearly signed him 10 years ago and finally getting their man this year.
The world champion and four-time Champions League winner is expected to slot straight into defence alongside club captain Maguire, although some have questioned how he will cope with the intensity of the league.
However Pires believes Varane will have no problem acclimatising to England's top division and that he will be a success under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Pires said: "Yes, Raphael will certainly adapt to English football. Surely there will be matches in which he will suffer physical clashes, but he is now a player of great experience. I see him well paired with Maguire, they will form an excellent duo."
Varane was allowed to leave Madrid after making it clear he wanted a new challenge and had just 12 months left on his contract at the Bernabeu. But after losing Sergio Ramos on a free transfer earlier in the window, Pires was surprised that they let Varane leave too.
"On my part there was a bit of surprise. In my opinion, president Perez wants to renew his team, but replacing Ramos and Varane will not be easy. For sure, the signing of David Alaba is a good choice.”
