Arsenal lead Liverpool, Juventus and PSG in Champions League race amid Mikel Arteta plan

Arsenal have been one of the most prolific teams in the Champions League during the 21st century, statistics show. Despite having not played in the competition since 2017, and with their last goal coming courtesy of Theo Walcott during a 5-1 demolition by Bayern Munich, the Gunners rank sixth on the list of goals scored in the 21st century, scoring 250 goals in 157 games.

And Mikel Arteta's side are not even the lowest ranked English side inside the top ten, with Liverpool four goals behind them, but that could soon change depending on how far the Reds go in this year's competition.

Of the Premier League sides within the top ten on the list, which was posted on reddit, Chelsea lead the way with 300 goals and occupy fourth place, whilst Manchester United sit one place, and two goals behind them.

Unsurprisingly, 12-time champions Real Madrid top the rankings with 500 goals in 237 games, adding another two to their collection yesterday following their 5-4 aggregate victory over Chelsea at the Bernabeu. And sorry for bringing it up again Arsenal fans, but Bayern Munich occupy second place on 476 goals, with 17% of those coming against the Gunners in the competition alone during the 21st century.

They include 15 goals that came in three consecutive matches against the German champions, having only conceded three in their previous three meetings. Unsurprisingly again, this time for the Gunners, Thierry Henry ranks as their top scorer in the competition, with 34 of his 35 goals coming in the 21st century, 16 ahead of second-placed Robin Van Persie.

The Gunners averaged 1.59 goals a game, the lowest of the four Premier League teams inside the top ten, with Liverpool averaging a total of 1.74 goals per game, whilst Chelsea and Manchester United averaged 1.73 and 1.59 respectively. And some even more ridiculous stats revealed that 105 (21%) of Real Madrid’s goals were scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, whilst 120 (28%) of Barcelona’s goals were scored by Lionel Messi.

During his time at Barcelona, Messi scored more goals against Arsenal than any other team in UEFA competition – nine in 447 minutes comprising six games. On average, that's a goal every 49 minutes and 40 seconds.

Ronaldo however, only played against Arsenal twice in the Champions League, but managed to net twice, both in the same game at the Emirates in the semi-final to send the Red Devils to the final in Rome.
