Arsenal handed major boost with positive Kieran Tierney injury update

Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney may be fit to face Newcastle on Monday, in news which will come as a major boost to Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

Tierney was ruled out of Thursday's clash with Crystal Palace with a calf complaint and Arteta confirmed he would be sent for an MRI scan on a potential muscle tear.

Arsenal clearly missed the 23-year-old's dynamism and attacking threat on the left flank as they were held to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates.

The performance led to claims the north London club are over-reliant on Tierney and raised serious questions of their ability to win matches without their star man.

As such, the results of Tierney's scan showing he has not suffered a muscle tear - as reported by The Athletic - will come as a major relief to Arteta.

The former Celtic man scored one, assisted one and helped Arsenal keep a clean sheet in his last Premier League outing - the 4-0 thrashing of West Brom.

Tierney also featured in wins over Chelsea and Brighton, winning a penalty in the 3-1 win over the former.

Speaking after the stalemate with the Eagles, Arteta was unsure how long Tierney could be sidelined for.

"Kieran's progression in the last few months has been incredible and now it is time for another player to step in," said the Spaniard.

"He's going to have an MRI scan tomorrow and see how he is. We don't know (how long he will be out for).

We will probably know more tomorrow (Friday) after testing him and how long he is going to be out for.

“It was a big disappointment to lose him and hopefully he will be back with us shortly."

The positive update from Tierney's scan means he may be back in time for the home clash with the Magpies.
