Arsenal dealt major Matheus Cunha transfer blow as Wolves boss provides update on £42m move

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is looking to reinforce his squad in January to help boost the Gunners' Premier League title chances against Manchester City. The north Londoners sit top of the table by five points at Christmas and resume action in the English top-flight on Boxing Day against West Ham at the Emirates Stadium.

Mykhaylo Mudryk has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in recent months but Shakhtar Donetsk's £87million valuation may put sporting director Edu Gaspar off making a move. Mudryk has expressed a desire to secure a move to the Premier League and hinted that his true value should be around £40million.

Shakhtar's reluctance to lower their demands could see the Gunners look elsewhere with Atletico Madrid star Matheus Cunha emerging as an option. The Brazilian forward has failed to impress with the La Liga outfit who are now looking to cash in on Cunha and recoup a small profit on their £26million investment made 18 months ago.

Arsenal are one of four Premier League clubs interested in signing Cunha in January, with Wolves having made the most progress over a deal. The Gunners will need to act fast to hijack the Brazilian's move to Molineux after Wolves boss Julien Lopetegui provided a major update on Cunha's future.

Speaking to Marca, Lopetegui said: “We will try to improve the team in the January market. Cunha is close.”

Leeds have been in touch with Cunha's representatives whilst Arsenal and Aston Villa both hold a long-term interest in the Atleti forward, according to GOAL. Cunha was left out of Atletico’s friendly clash with Ponferradina last week which may have been due to fears that an injury could wreck his hopes of a January exit as the Spanish outfit look to cash in on the Brazilian, as per El Desmarque.
