Arsenal 'better' than Brazil as former Liverpool star makes huge World Cup claim

Former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder Dietmar Hamann has claimed that Arsenal's Invincibles were a better side than the Brazil outfit that won the World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

Brazil, who knocked out a devastated England side in the quarter-final of the competition thanks to a famous free-kick from Ronaldinho, are largely remembered as one of the best international teams ever.

Whilst it's never easy - or necessary right for that matter - to compare international and club sides, Hamann believes that the Gunners' unbeaten side of 2003/04 was a better team than the 2002 World Cup winning squad.

Speaking to Stake.com, he said: "I’m not sure whether that Brazil team was the best team, I played against some brilliant teams in the Premier League. You know, Ronaldinho was pretty young at the time. but obviously Rivaldo and Ronaldo are two outstanding players and Cafu as well. A lot had to go our way obviously. but I just feel it wasn't a team that was unbeatable even though they were very good.

"I played against the 'Invincibles' Arsenal squad in the early 2000s and they were better, when they went a season unbeaten. That Arsenal team was exceptional. In my first game in England I played against the Manchester United team with Newcastle in the FA Cup final. We won the treble. There were some outstanding teams in the Premier League over the years. As I said, it's hard to compare the national teams and club teams. But you know, these teams were special."

We'll unfortunately never be able to tell who actually was better. However, we can appreciate just how great both teams were, as we look forward to the rest of the World Cup before Mikel Arteta's new look Gunners return in late December.
