A man has been taken into custody near Wollongong after allegedly firing a series of shots in the street and entering a store, prompting a stand-off with police.
A siege operation was activated with a number of road closures in place and members of the public urged to avoid the area, police said shortly before 11am on Sunday.
They say a man has since been arrested and there is no ongoing threat to the community. No injuries have been reported.
Footage on social media shows a masked man clad in black walking along Acacia Street, Windang and firing at least one rifle shot into the air outside a real estate office.
Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon told ABC the man had fired up to five shots.
"That male then subsequently went into a dollar shop premises in Windang at which stage further police and tactical police were called," he said.
"There were negotiations with the male while he was in that shop. He has subsequently surrendered and is in the custody of police and is under arrest at the moment."
Mr Lanyon said it was still too early to identify a motive for the man's actions.
