Armie Hammer has faced a huge backlash after he joked that American citizens were facing civil war as they went to vote in the US elections.
One of the more divisive campaigns of recent times has left the country boiling with tension and the Social Network star thought he would make light of the situation on Twitter.
The 34-year-old actor tweeted: "Are we civil warring today or what?"
The Call Me By Your Name star played on fears that Donald Trump has not committed to a peaceful transfer of power if he was to lose the presidential election to Joe Biden.
Trump had reportedly 'enabled' white white supremacist group the Proud Boys after telling them to "stand by" during a recent presidential debate.
Fans of the actor were not happy that he thought that the possibility of far-right violence was something to poke fun at and called him out for not recognising his "privilege".
One follower hit back at the actor, tweeting: "rich white man don’t make jokes about things that don’t affect you challenge."
Another added: "it’s not even surprising that you, as a white man got on here and said something like this. this is real and this something that actually affects people. step out of your little life of privilege for a second and see that."
Armie, who is the son of businessman Michael Armand Hammer and the great-grandson of oil tycoon Armand Hammer, is not stranger to controversy on social media.
He was forced to apologise in 2018 for comments he made, when he criticised celebrities for posting photos of themselves with the late Stan Lee.
