Armed thugs with bats 'stole £30k' when Mercedes was ambushed in gang 'have off'

Around £30,000 is understood to have been stolen by criminals during a dramatic incident in north Liverpool.

Mobile phone footage showed a group of masked men surrounding a silver Mercedes near Newsham Park on Monday night.

The driver of the Mercedes was hit with a baseball bat during the incident on the junction of Denman Drive and Newsham Drive. The 34-year-old suffered minor injuries, police have confirmed.

The Mercedes was blocked in by an Audi and a second smaller car during the incident, in the Tuebrook area of the city.

A source told the ECHO that around £30,000 was stolen during the incident, which is known in criminal circles as a "have off."

The source told the ECHO that the men who carried the robbery were all gang members and that the incident was carefully planned and "targeted."

The claims have been corroborated by a second trusted source.

Police declined to comment on the claims, although the force confirmed that the victim had cooperated with police.

Dramatic mobile phone footage of the incident emerged earlier this week, which showed the driver of the Mercedes challenging one of the criminals.

In the video the driver runs at the masked man who appeared to hit the driver with a bat, which could be heard falling to the floor.

There is then an argument as one of the men involved shouts 'You little muppet.'

One of the criminals, who were all dressed in black, can then be heard shouting at the driver of a waiting 'getaway' car to open the door so he could get in.

At one point he shouts "what are you doing" as he tried to get inside the car which moves off.

The criminal eventually manages to open the door and the car makes off.

The driver of the Audi then opens his door to shout a message at the victim before making off.

Yesterday ( Wednesday) Merseyside Police confirmed an investigation is underway following the incident, which happened at around 8.20pm.

A spokesperson said: "When patrols arrived at the scene they located a silver Mercedes car with damage to a window.

"Enquiries were carried out and the owner of the car, a 34 year-old man, was located and spoken to.

"The man had been assaulted and suffered minor injuries which are believed to have been caused by a baseball bat.

"An investigation is underway and house-to-house and CCTV enquiries are currently underway."

Detective Inspector Paul Jones said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Denman Drive around 8.20pm on Monday night who witnessed this incident or saw the other vehicles leaving the scene to contact us.

"I would also ask if anyone has CCTV, mobile phone or dashcam footage to get in touch.
