Armed police descend on Southmead road after 'gunshot heard'

Armed police descended on a Southmead cul-de-sac this morning (May 20) after what sounded like a "gunshot" was reportedly heard in the area.

A man was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a firearm after police were called to a disturbance in Sarum Crescent at around 6.30am.

The area was sealed off by officers, with First Bus services being diverted as a result.

According to Avon and Somerset Constabulary, a man refused to come out of his property.

When are armed police allowed to fire?

A police spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a disturbance in Sarum Crescent in Southmead at about 6.30am today.

"There was a report of what sounded like a gunshot.

"A man was in a property in the cul-de-sac refusing to come out.

"The area was sealed off and armed officers attended as a precaution.

"Shortly afterwards a man was detained and has been arrested."

According to First Bus, the road was reopened by around 8am.

UPDATE: On Monday afternoon (May 20), a police spokesperson added: "We have reviewed the incident reported in Sarum Crescent this morning and can confirm that no gunshot was fired.

"The incident was a dispute over two people sharing a property in the cul-de-sac.

"The man arrested has been released no further action in relation to the reported firearms incident."
