They say you shouldn’t meet your heroes - and although Anthony Bourdain is dead and Keith Richards won’t return my calls, I did find myself in the fortunate position of meeting one of my more niche personal icons last week: Mystic Michaela. I’ve been following Megan, aka Mystic Michaela, for five years now - first becoming enthralled by her world during The Great Strangeness of 2020.
Through her books and podcast Know Your Aura, Megan, an aura reader and medium, explains the colours that she sees around people and how that translates to their personalities and preferences.
She’s been a fixture in my kitchen for a while, talking me through life’s mysteries as I burn food and set various things on fire - a helpful friend from afar. And so, when I found out that we were actually going to speak, the fangirl inside me almost short-circuited from anxiety. Had I put too much faith in her? What if she was a fraud? Was I about to ruin my favourite podcast for myself?

My instructions prior to the call were to send over a picture of me as a child, a picture I’d taken of myself specifically for the reading, and then to send over images of any friends, family, or pets that I wanted to have read as well.
While I’d like to say that I sent over pictures of everyone I love, cherish, and wanted to check in on; I actually sent over a motley crew of the sociopaths and reprobates I’ve collected throughout my life in an attempt to gain some insight into their feral brains.
For balance, I also included a picture of my cat and daughter to offset the lunacy (although neither are models of sanity). I’d later ask Megan if it’s ever overwhelming to see auras around people - like having the world scream-read their diaries to you when you’re just trying to buy milk, but she shrugged it off and assured me that it was more like noticing people’s hairstyles.
Through her work, Megan aims to help people understand themselves more profoundly, and give them the tools to navigate the world more confidently. In a way, auras can be seen as personality traits - with some colours indicating an orderly disposition, others demonstrating a desire to lead, and a few implying a predilection for computer games.
She’s emphatic that there aren’t any bad or good auras, and that they are just the lens through which everyone sees the world. People usually have two colours, although sometimes she sees three, and rarer still are the more out-there auras ranging from “cult-leader green” to “starseeds” (apparently Keanu Reeves is one).
Through her podcast - I’ve gained some insight into myself - what motivates me, how I’m wired, and why I enjoy living like a reclusive house hermit. I’d also like to think that I’m now more empathetic to others and less likely to become enraged when my athletics-obsessed “green-aura” husband spends 75 minutes on the loo watching clips of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Going into the reading, I’d identified myself as purple and indigo. Purples are said to be creative and kooky, but can also be self-destructive and impulsive. Indigos, by contrast, are more introspective and intuitive, despising harsh neon lights and favouring time alone to small-talk with thousands of people.
I’d always thought that I was more purple, owing to the number of insane decisions I’ve made in my life, but apparently at this stage (two children, several animals, husband who gets lost easily), my aura is very indigo, with sparkles of purple - which would indicate that I’m now more of a homebody and less likely to have a mental breakdown and move to Tahiti.
Throughout the reading, Megan highlights key areas of my life: how my childhood affects my parenting, how my children influence my outlook on life, and she even gives me some homework to do to help clarify my career path.
“Everything I’ve told you today, this isn’t [anything] that you didn’t already know…this is stuff you can trust in yourself” she tells me towards the end - which is true, most of what she’s said isn’t surprising, but it was enlightening to have certain aspects of my life highlighted, and strangely comforting for an impartial stranger to confirm my strengths, weaknesses, and emotional proclivities.
But, while all of this was profound and life-affirming stuff, the fun and unexpected insights came via the waifs and strays I’d dragged into the reading. Apparently one of my family members is receiving secret gifts from a “son-like” energy, which led me to the restrained conclusion that they’ve become a later-life dominatrix with a baby-faced sub.
Megan also nailed my daughter’s energy - loud and unruly, raucous and vibrant, and confirmed my cat’s distaste for children. The only part of the reading that I disagreed with was on this topic - our feline overlord - who was described as having a preference for my husband due to his alluring smell. I laughed at the time to hide my secret rage - knowing that I am, actually, our cat’s favourite.
I left our conversation with some lingering doubts over her reading of our cat
While I’m well aware that many people regard subjects like mediumship and auras with suspicion at best, and hostility at worst, I’ve found Mystic Michaela’s world to be a delightful addition to my day, providing me with a curious and offbeat way to examine society at large.
With so many terrible headlines and raging politicians out there, it’s nice to have a little sunshine - a ray of magical hope piercing through the dreary fog of the everyday. Ultimately, my fears at meeting such a prominent figure in my life were unfounded as Megan was exactly as quirky, kind, and gentle as she seems on her podcast.
And, while she perfectly evaluated my life and provided intriguing intel about those around me, I left our conversation with some lingering doubts over her reading of our cat - a thought that haunted me until the following morning, when I found her perched on my husband’s shoe, basking in his foot smell.
It was then that I realised that Megan was probably right about this too - our furry little strumpet doesn’t prefer me, she’s just been using me all along to get closer to the tangy zest of my husband’s toes.
