"Are egg yolks bad for you?" Doctor explains

Eggs are an important food item and we all love having it, mostly for its unique taste and also for the fact that few recipes of eggs do not require culinary skills at all; for example boiling eggs.

However, many among us do not see the yolk as a healthy food. It is widely believed that egg yolks cause cholesterol and this is the reason why people discard egg yolks and only consume the white portion.

In a recent video, shared on Instagram, Dr.Priyanka Sehrawat, MD Med,DM Neurology (AIIMS Delhi) has discussed the various myths associated with eggs. Dr Sehrawat has emphasized on the rich egg yolk and why people should think before discarding it.

"Nutrient composition of egg white and egg yolk are different and are equally important"

"Egg white has great amount of protein and vitamin B2. But Egg yolk has different vitamins n minerals which are also hugely important for our body," she writes.

She goes on to break down the nutrient composition of egg yolks. "It has fat soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin E, Vitamin K, & omega 3 which is a healthy fatty acid which boosts our immunity!," she adds.

Eating a whole egg provides a balanced amount of protein, vitamins and minerals, she concludes.

Egg yolk is rich in selenium

Selenium is an important nutrient which improves the health of the hair and nail. It also boosts immunity.

Selenium also has a role in thyroid health.

Deficiency of selenium leads to Keshan disease, a type of cardiomyopathy, or disease of heart muscle and Kashin-Beck disease, a type of osteoarthritis.

Signs of selenium deficiency

The common signs associated with selenium deficiency are: nausea, vomiting, headaches, confusion, lethargy, seizures, and sometimes coma.

Egg yolks are also loaded with essential nutrients like vitamin A, D, E and K, folate, vitamin B12, and amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine.

Egg yolks also consist of potassium, sodium, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus and iron in trace amounts.

One large egg comprises 55 calories, 2.5 grams of protein, 4.5 grams of fat, and 0.61 grams of carbohydrates.
