Apple's iOS 17.4 update release expected between March 4-5, complying with EU regulations

Apple's next iPhone update, iOS 17.4, is just around the corner. While the exact release date has yet to be confirmed, we have some clues to help us narrow it down. One significant aspect of this upcoming update involves Apple's compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act, which is set to take effect on March 6, 2024.

According to the Act, certain large online platforms, known as gatekeepers, have the power to act as private rule makers, potentially creating a bottleneck in the digital economy. Apple falls under this category. As per the Act, gatekeepers have until March 6, 2024, to implement the necessary requirements. Given that March 6 falls on a Wednesday, we can expect Apple to release iOS 17.4 sometime between Friday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 6.

Traditionally, Apple prefers to release its updates on Tuesdays, although Mondays are sometimes chosen as well. The fact that the third developer beta of iOS 17.4 was just released on February 13, with the public beta expected on February 14, suggests that Apple is on track with its release plans.

This upcoming update brings about significant changes, especially for European Union residents. One notable change revolves around the opening up of iOS to external app stores, in line with the Digital Markets Act. Additionally, users can expect improvements to features like Stolen Device Protection, new emojis (including a phoenix and interactive smileys), and even a refreshing slice of lime emoji.

For Apple Cash users, there will be an enhancement that allows them to create a virtual debit card when Apple Pay isn't available, thanks to the assignment of a virtual card number. Moreover, there will be new ways to control music on devices like HomePod and Apple TV, along with a design update to Apple Music's Listen Now tab, which will be renamed as Home.

These are just some of the highlights of iOS 17.4, as there are bound to be more features and improvements introduced in this upcoming update. For instance, a Live Activity feature will be available for the running stopwatch, adding to the already comprehensive set of functionalities.

Considering all of these factors, we can deduce that March 1 is unlikely to be the release date, as it falls on a Friday, a day typically reserved for urgent or unexpected updates. Similarly, the weekend is unlikely to witness the release. Since March 6 is ahead of the United States in terms of time zones and Apple typically releases updates at 7 p.m. Central European Time, it is also unlikely to be the release date.

This leaves us with two possibilities: Monday, March 4, or Tuesday, March 5. While either option is plausible, my prediction leans towards Monday, March 4. Given the magnitude of this update and its implications, Apple may choose to 'march forth' on March 4th for this consequential release. Quite fitting, don't you think?

In any case, Apple users and enthusiasts can look forward to the arrival of iOS 17.4 in the near future, bringing an array of exciting features and enhancements to their devices.
