Apple releases iOS 17.3.1 update with bug fixes and improvements

12 iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 Features That Make Your Life Easier

If it feels like just yesterday that you updated your iPhone, you're not imagining things. Apple surprised users with yet another update just two weeks after the previous one. Usually, we would expect the next iPhone update to come next month with the release of iOS 17.4. So, what's the deal with iOS 17.3.1? How can you get it, and should you bother?

First things first, iOS 17 is now up to version iOS 17.3.1. However, before you rush to update, note that I will be updating this post in a week with final thoughts on whether or not you should upgrade. Keep in mind that iOS 17.3.1 is compatible only with models from 2018 or later, including iPhone XS, iPhone XR, all models from the iPhone 11 to the latest iPhone 15, and the second- and third-generation iPhone SE. You can get the update through automatic downloads, but you might get it faster if you manually check for updates by opening the Settings app, selecting General, and then tapping on Software Update.

So, what does iOS 17.3.1 bring to the table? According to Apple's release notes, this update primarily focuses on fixing a specific bug: text duplication or overlapping while typing. That's all the information Apple has provided, indicating that they wanted to address this issue promptly before the imminent release of the more significant iOS 17.4 update next month.

Interestingly, Apple's security updates notes for iOS 17.3.1 mention, 'This update has no published CVE entries.' While this doesn't explicitly state that there are no security updates, it suggests that this release is primarily dedicated to fixing the aforementioned bug rather than addressing security vulnerabilities.

Feedback from users who have updated their devices has been generally positive. One user expressed satisfaction, stating, 'Working great, no overlapping text anymore.' There haven't been widespread reports of issues caused by the update, which is expected considering the minor nature of this release.

However, there have been a few isolated reports of iPhones going into recovery mode after installing the update. Two iPhone 15 Pros were affected by this issue, both of them coming from iOS 17.3. While these incidents are concerning, they seem to be rare for now. It's definitely a situation worth monitoring to see if it becomes more widespread.

Some users have wondered if iOS 17.3.1 also resolves the keyboard lag problem that has plagued certain iPhone models. However, it's important to clarify that this bug is unrelated. According to a commenter, the keyboard lag issue has been addressed in the second developer beta of iOS 17.4. We'll know for certain when the final software is released next month.

Based on the limited number of reported issues, I would recommend upgrading to iOS 17.3.1. However, if you weren't experiencing the text duplication problem, there's no rush to update. If you're someone who prefers to wait and see, check back on Friday, February 16, when I'll provide my final verdict on whether or not you should upgrade.

In the ever-evolving world of technology, it's no surprise that updates come fast and frequently. With iOS 17.3.1, Apple aims to address a specific issue, ensuring a smoother experience for iPhone users. Stay tuned for more updates and insights on the ever-changing landscape of iOS.
