Apple to discontinue iPod after more than two decades

Apple have announced that the iPod will be discontinued after 21 years of production.

The device, which was released in 2001 was revolutionary for its time and with space for 1,000 songs and a 10-hour battery life, almost everyone had one.

There have been no updated iPods since 2019, but the latest model of the iPod touch was in production until the announcement of its discontinuation.

This comes as smartphone technology has overtaken the iPod, making its capabilities redundant.

All features that were originally present on an iPod can now be found on the latest iPhones and according to Tony Fadell, the inventor of the device; the iPod made the iPhone possible.

The iPod has been credited as one of the devices that played a big part in turning Apple from a small company on the verge of bankruptcy to the huge multi-billion dollar tech firm we know today.

The device has seen multiple iterations including the original iPod, the iPod shuffle, the iPod mini, and the more recent iPod touch.

You can still get your hand on the remaining iPod touch models "while stocks last" according to Apple.
