Apple announces new iPad Air with impressive upgrades and lower price

Apple has announced the arrival of its brand new 5th Generation iPad Air, featuring 5G connectivity along with a more affordable price tag.

The tech giant revealed the latest version of its iPad Air, which starts at £569, yesterday (March 8) at its "Peek Performance" event.

As well as faster connectivity, the tablet features Apple’s breakthrough M1 Chip (also found in the iPad Pro), a new front camera with Centre Stage and a USB-C port with up to 2x times faster transfer speeds.

The iPad is available to pre-order from Friday, March 11 on the Apple store, and will be in stores from March 18. It was announced alongside a number of other new Apple products including the new iPhone SE.

The iPad Air's 12MP ultra-wide camera is likely to be able to deliver much better photography than many other 12MP cameras, thanks to the AI backup enabled by that M1 chip.

Similarly, the iPad's AI capabilities allow it to make use of 'Centre Stage' - Apple's auto-framing video mode, which was introduced when the iPhone 13 was unveiled.

The new iPad Air is also compatible with the second-generation Apple Pencil, making it an even more versatile device.

“Whether it’s a college student taking elaborate notes, a content creator working on their latest project, or a gamer playing graphics-intensive titles, users love iPad Air for its amazing performance and versatility in such a portable design,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

He adds: “With the breakthrough M1 chip, Ultra Wide front camera with Centre Stage, and ultra-fast 5G, iPad Air is now more powerful, more capable, and simply more fun than ever.”

The revamped iPad air tablet will be available in grey, silver, pink, purple and blue finishes and will also go on sale from March, 18 with prices starting at £569.

The tech giant is also set to release an all-new desktop computer system called Mac Studio, along with a special gadget to go with it.
