Apology after New Years Honours recipients' personal details posted online

The Cabinet Office has apologised after personal details of the people receiving New Year Honours were posted online.

A list of the home addresses of recipients, including police officers, politicians and celebrities, was published in error, the office said.

More than 1,000 people were given recognition in this year's list of Honours, including a 16-year-old from Oldham and a 99-year-old war veteran from Bury.

A spokesman for the Cabinet Office said: "A version of the New Year Honours 2020 list was published in error which contained recipients' addresses.

"The information was removed as soon as possible.

"We apologise to all those affected and are looking into how this happened.

"We have reported the matter to the ICO (Information Commissioner's Office) and are contacting all those affected directly."

The list saw awards given to a number of famous faces including England's World Cup winners, top entertainers including Sir Elton John and Olivia Newton-John, and prominent figures from politics and the legal profession.

Among them were the former director of public prosecutions Alison Saunders and ex-Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith, whose knighthood sparked a backlash from critics.

As work and pensions secretary under David Cameron, Sir Iain was the architect of the Government's controversial Universal Credit welfare reforms.

Opposition parties said it "beggared belief" that someone whose policies had caused so much distress should be honoured in this way.

Lisa Nandy, Labour MP for Wigan, lambasted the award, tweeting it was a "disgraceful decision by Boris Johnson to reward a legacy of cruelty and failure".

"This regime deliberately removed the safety net. It stripped people of their dignity. There is no honour in that," she added.
